bought a bike yesterday, took it apart today!!

Post by Kurt999 »

ok so I picked this up yesterday
Image

and dismantled it today to see what I actually had.ll the bodywork off revealed nothing particularly nasty onther than a sh1t reg rec. checked the charging and seems ok but added to list of mods to do. Removed the flywheel bolt cover and timing mark cap from the left engine case Tank off, airbox open, really dirty standard air filter, sub filters intact but crumbling when touched. airbox off, carbs relatively clean. carb clamps all really loose. carbs off, Pilot screws have crossed slots in them and no d shaped protrusion so have obviously been modified. I'm working outside and don't really have anywhere to strip the carbs themselves so i just made sure the pilot screws were free and counted how many turns out they were set at..1.5 front and 1.75 rear. Left them where they were. Plugs finger tight if that, and really old. Good colour though. Oil filter looks new and oil golden colour.

Rear rocker cover off, cam lobes pristine.

Set the crank timing mark and cam timing marks up, cable tied the camchain to the sprocket and pulled the rear camchain tensioner. Replaced with Kreiger MCCT and set up as per instructions. Followed instructions and replaced front CCT with MCCT.

Cup of tea time and a call to Dave Silver for the parts. Also ordered the vacuum takeoff to fit to the front cylinder for carb balancing.

Bolted back together and fired up on the button!!

Pads good all round. New fluid brake and clutch. Fork seals good. No squeaks from rear suspension. Chain and sprockets good. Tyres plenty of tread, pressures ok. Lights and horn all working. Left switchgear main beam switch sticking and needs lubing maybe.

As it all went so well, decided top push my luck and check the front header manifold nuts. Came undone with just a little effort, copper slipped and done back up.

All in all I'm chuffed!!! Looks like the bike may have had a minor spill in the past but only because the left mirror is marked, the bar end is slightly bent and there is no foam inside the left side fairing. No other signs tho.

Sorry about the poor grammar, just typing as I think!!

Time for  woohoo

Well done Neil. That's the main maintenance tasks sorted (except maybe the rear suspsension linkage) now it's time to modify it to within an inch of it's life

The carb screws aren't chewed up either so I reckon they're not messed with!

Haha yeah I've been looking on Ebay for some bits, but to be honest I'll probably leave the motor alone and just put on some lighter road legal cans.
I want to sort the reg rec, then get the forks to Revolution, replace the shock, and some better tyres while its apart. Brakes could do with a bit of help too, but honestly its plenty quick enough as a road bike. I haven't ridden much lately and when I have been out it's always 2 up on my other bike, so I'm just gonna take it easy for a while.

You did do well Neil  Good to see a new bike (to you) getting a good check over before going off riding it
I always think doing that first gives you confidence in riding it.

Well, it's been a mission (see here if you have the stamina... http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... oubleshoot ) but she's up and running with a new RR, MCCTs, a Moriwaki style belly pan and a pair of spangly GPR stainless cans. I've done about 600 shakedown miles and all is good-except the suspension.

I've been trying to contact Roger D but the site is down, and emails are bouncing back. I found his mobile number somewhere on here, but as he didn't give it to me I don't feel that comfortable texting or phoning him, especially in case something is amiss at his end. Anybody know if everything is ok and how I should contact him?

Thanks
