engine overhauling

Post by Theodio »

Hi guys!

I'm back with my new exhaust can (the prievious were stolen... :( )

I'm thinking of replacing my pistons+rings of my engine to renew it. Having as my guide the Honda manual I cannot understand how to dismantle the engine.

As a rookie I have some questions:

1. Do I have to remove the engine from the bike?
2. do I have to split the crank case?
3. How do i gain access to remove the pistons?
4. Can u help me due step by step guide?

I'll need:

1. A pair of CP or JE pistons standard bore
2. piston pins and clips
2. std honda 2 sets rings
3. bearings (rod)
4. 2 rod bolts (new Honda)

It would be a lot easier to remove the engine to do it, if you can get the front engine mount bolt out.

I don't think you would need to split the cases. Should be able to get to everything by removing the heads and the sump. I could be wrong but someone will confirm.

Step by step guide is easy to create. Just take lots of photos as you do it

Also be prepared to by more engine gaskets like the cylinder head gaskets ect. Could be a bit more expensive than you first think

The only hard part about removing the engine is the front mounting bolt on the rear of the front cylinder. It seizes in place. Sometimes there's no option but to cut the engine out rendering it scrap. Last time I had a VTR engine out it took about an hr or more hitting it with a large lump hammer! :O would it not be cheaper for you just to find a low mileage engine and fit that than overhaul it?

Not quite...
You can, I think, leave the upper crankcase half in the frame. I've not tried this but I think it will work.
But it's easier with the engine out; I'm just giving you a choice if you can't get the engine mounting bolts out.
The engine needs to be split at the crankcases, upper and lower half.
The pistons come out with the crank. Loosen the big end bolts before removing the crank from the upper half.
JE pistons come with gudgeon (wrist) pins and circlips, but yes, you will need a set of rings.
Don't buy pistons until you have stripped the engine, you might need to get the bores rebored and fit oversize pistons.
Yes, you will need both halves of the big end bearing shells (4 in total) and also four shells (both halves x 2) of the main bearings- there's no point stripping the engine and not replacing these while you're there.
You will need FOUR big end bolts- two for each conrod.
Plus two head gaskets, a clutch cover side and an alternator side gasket, and any o rings/seals etc that you find aren't in good condition plus seals etc as you go.
No idea of prices where you are but £400 is not enough, so 400 euros won't be either.

Either put up with the one you have or buy a 2nd hand lump, or develop deeper pockets  .

You will need:
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Could the big ends not be undone from the sump and then lift the piston and Conrod out through the top Tony? Saying that though, with a job like this it may as well be done properly and change everything else that is normally not accessible at the same time. Most likely easier in the long run, especially with the engine out and if re-boring and/or honing is to be done.

Thank you all!

I thought it would be easier but its a lot of trouble. My engine runs sweet with no problems. Shes burning little oil only.

But bying a new engine doesn't include some risk of buying a same engine??

Obviously yes- if you purchase a second-hand engine then you risk buying in other unknown problems with that - but at least you have a running bike and can strip and tune the other engine at your leisure. Where would you plan doing the engine rebuild as you recently had your exhausts pilfered as you only seem to have street parking. Ideally you need workbench space or a relatively spacious kitchen and lots of newspaper!
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.
