Re: help me
I was like you Gabi. it looks complex at first but in effect is really easy. First thing is get used to stripping the bike down fast to the carbs that will give you the confidence for the next bit.
Re: help me
That's it really, the hard, well not hard but time consuming, part is stripping everything down. The timing bit is easy, it's the fear of the unknown and potential for disaster if it was screwed up beyond belief. Which.... is not going to happen is it!!! Your halfway there already mate. The next step is only to loosen the cam caps and re-align the cams, pull the chain back over and tighten the cam caps back down, tighten up the tensioner, then move onto the front cylinder.
When pulling the chain back over start on the side opposite the tensioner and pull that taught. Cable tie it on if needs be. Then hand tighten the cap back on for that cam but don't do it up tight yet as you may need a little movement in the cam to help get the chain over the cam on the tensioner side. Once your happy that they are both aligned correctly, tighten the caps back down fully in a diagonal pattern up to the required torque or maybe a tad looser to be on the safe side and account for any stretched threads. Do not overtighten them as they can snap like most bolts on these bikes and it's not a massive torque IIRC 29Nm. 3/8 drive ratchet is good enough. What's important is to have them all done up consistently the same.
You can do it, don't let the nerves get the better of you.
Take pics and post up on here if you want verification that you marks are aligned OK. If it wasn't so far away I'd pop over and do it myself this weekend. As it stands the Pineapple's got me working. Singapore sling anyone

Re: help me
Have you convinced your self that the timing is out now, ?
It seems strange that both Cylinders are out by same amount and the relationship between them is correct. I would still consider that the flywheel might have lost it's key and so it's marks are out of place
It can be worth putting a long screwdriver in the plug hole when the valves are at the correct position for tdc and the marks on the cams line up with the head, then see if the piston is at the top of its stroke. That will confirm if the marks on the flywheel are correct or not

Re: help me
No I said it sounds like the timing is out. The screwdriver down the plughole is a good idea and worth checking. But for the woodruff key to not be in the flywheel then it would have had to have been removed and put back on without it surly. Where's the front cylinder at Mmm some pics would be good.
Gab leave it for now if you need the bike for Sunday. This needs investigating and it's not a job to be rushed.

Re: help me
Carl, I was on the phone with Gabi yesterday afternoon and I was doubting his timing was out because
A) the bike was running ok before he did the job,
B) he observed the problem with the flywheel timing marks before he did any thing with the CCTs
C) the back to the front timing was still correct at 1.25 revs
But that was why I was asking if he now thought it was real problem
I think the screwdriver to check for tdc will be the fastest check one way or the other

Re: help me
Agree that the screwdriver check is a quick and easy check, it can do no harm.AMCQ46 wrote:Carl, I was on the phone with Gabi yesterday afternoon and I was doubting his timing was out because

Another check (although I don't think it's likely to be a sheared key) is to remove the alternator bolt, and juts look in to see if the keyways are still lined up.
Gabi, I said you should have just dropped it round to mine.....
You'll get there.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
