How To Prime Engine After Replacing Fuel Tank

A quick question, well really I am after a quick answer.

As some would know I have had the back end out of the bike to replace all the bearings and associated parts in the rear suspension. This has taken about 5 weeks, waiting for parts, etc.

I then spent 5 weeks in England.

So now it's time to replace the tank and connect the pipes if I can remember where they all go.

Do I need to prime the carbs in some way to get her to start after such a long layoff. Would the carbs have emptied out in this time (evaporation, etc).

If so how do I prime the carbs? It is an '03 model and does not appear to have a prime position on the fuel petcock.

The fuel tap is vac operated, hook her up and turn her over, I am not aware of anyway to prime the carbs.

Have a go, it can't hurt.

When I fitted the jet kit to my carbies I did exactly that, hook her up and away you go.

Just make sure the battery is fully charged. I doubt it'l take that many more turn overs than normal to fire the beast up.

Assuming you have a 16l tank...

Two fat fuel pipes on the large spigots.

The Vac pipe fits onto the small spigot on the rear that points sideways...do not connect anything to the spigot that points down.

The two over flow pipes fit under the tank on the right hand side but are different sizes so that's the easy bit.

Don't forget to turn the tap itself back on IF you had turned it off.

Don't forget to connect the fuel sender back up.

+1 on the battery charger.

Make sure you have fuel in it.

Give the starter a couple of quick prods to pull some fuel through.

Pull choke if ness push & hold the starter.

Grin manically when it fires up.

Get your kit on & ride the throbbing monster.

Fill it up at the nearest fuel station...Ride...fill up at the nearest fuel station...ect ect.

I have the 19 litre tank so the pipes may be a bit different.

Yep they are.

The difference is the petcock is mounted to the frame not the tank.

The pipes fit the same basically.

One big pipe from the tank fits to the spigot & connect the vac pipe to the horizontal small spigot not the vertical one. Unless you took them off the pipes to the carbs should still be in place as there's no need to remove them when taking the tank off.

Breather pipes are the same & you still need to remember to connect the fuel sender wire.

There is no tap but you probably know that as flue would have gushed out when you took the pipe off, unless the tank was empty.

Check this thread it shows the strip down of an 02 plater with the 19L tank. As you will see its impossible to go wrong with the pipes. The main vac pipe attaches to the petcock which is a separate entity attached to the frame. The other 2 small pipes well just look at the photos they say it all :D
