What's your budget, I have a Hoffman hydraulic table lift it beats anything else but did cost over £2k (it's for work), you can get decent ones for £1k, £500 will get you a foot pump one but go for scissor type as they tend to be more stable, make sure it's wide enough for a paddock stand and not got a chequer plate top as it's hard to put a bike on a paddock stand. Or search the high end lifts 2nd hand.

Not used the skylift, it works the same as an abba stand, good idea but not sure I'd went a bike lifted that high on that stand, would like to see one demonstrated before I'd commit to it.

Depends what you want to do to the bike. The Abba lift will do just that, lift it to a good working height. Ok for wheel and fork work but as Popkat has said, not the most stable thing in the world. Like your friend, I also got myself a heavy duty lift from Machine Mart and, although as you say it has a big footprint, it is one of the best things I have ever bought. No more scrambling about on the floor, good adjustable working for a variety of jobs and, together with front and rear stands, good for engine removal etc. ( and you can pick them up a lot cheaper than the £450 plus for the Abba)
Your choice at the end of the day but I would still pick a standard lift myself.
Cheers
Tim

These can be a bit wobbly when going up, hence I said earlier scissor type is better, also these are good if you have a bike with a centre stand but paddock stands aren't easy to use on the chequer plate top, you don't want the bike going over while your putting your stand on. Smooth top is what you want for paddock stands.

After much thought etc I've ordered a machine mart lift got a really good deal on 1  don't intend doing anything heavy on it just the odd maintenance etc and keeps the bike off the floor but if I don't get on with it you may see it listed in the sales section
