beadle is/was a TV presenter who has a deformed hand, keeps it hidden when presenting, its smaller than the other normal one.

used to do saturday night tea time shows, for the masses, mostly shite.

Oh, that's just nasty!

It seems to have become a big thing over here to get tv presenters (weather, news, etc) with speech impediments! I'd be surprised if a well-spoken person actually has a chance these days.
