Noisy clutch

Post by vtrjock »

I've mentioned this before some time back. The clutch continuously makes a high pitched 'bearing on the way out noise', which you can still hear even over the cans of death on tickover.
I thought it was kind of normal until my mate at work bought another storm and then fired it up next to mine. His is silent in comparison.
I'll whip it off and have a look over the next few months, do the thrust bearings generally go on these? Ta

Never heard of a thrust brg failing. Is it making the noise when the clutch is pulled in or when idling with the clutch out?
The thrust brg shouldn't be doing anything when the clutch is out

Before you start pulling the clutch apart, it might be worth checking the push rod can move freely and that it's not bent.
Before removing the clutch slave cylinder with front sprocket cover, whip off the clutch lever to stop the slave cylinder being pushed out.

trouble is, it could be many things, including water pump, etc. Does it go away when the clutch lever is pulled in?
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

The noise is constant and emanates from 'around' the clutch area (according to my ear-screw driver).
Engaging/disengaging the clutch makes no difference at all.
Having said that, I guess the water pump isn't too far away, I'll check it out.

It's easy enough to check, but a bit of work.

the trick is to disconnect the wires leading to the ignition sensor BEFORE you remove the clutch casing....

Or have a 10mm socket, short extension and rachet ready. If you end up getting a new paper gasket, smear some grease on one side and then it's reusable. I smear the outside so the gasket then stays with the engine casing next time well pulling the clutch casing off. It also allows removal of the pulse generator (sensor) as Tony mentioned which is attached on the inside of the clutch casing..
