cam chain slack adjustment

When setting the slack is it 7mm both up and down or 3.5 mm up and down?

5-7mm is the total up and down, If you go to the workshop section and look for manual cct it shows how to set them and the are useful pictures and vids

Push the chain down and set your tape then lift it 5-7mm and set it and recheck till you get it right

Best not follow the Haynes manual for CCT procedure as they've cocked it up.

Your only setting the cam chain slack when fitting manual tensioners, standard ones auto adjust, I can't see Haynes manuals telling you how to fit manual tensioners.

Just done the back one and yeah I set it to 6mm. Gives it a bit of leeway then before it needs adjusting again

Front cylinder is a little trickier. If you drop the left rad you can gain more viewing access

Well that was a faff

Couldn't quite see to do the front cam chain slack too well but it's round about the same... At the end of the day, it's not too tight and it's not too loose so meh... It'll do. If it rattles then i'll just have to give it a tweak.
Just a quick question - when rotating the crank the cam chains get a bit where they go a bit slacker - is this normal?

But yeah, had massive issues where the bloody seal wouldnt stay on the bottom of the front valve cover whilst tryin to put it back.
Removed the oil cooler but was still a wombles pain as that cross member between the frame kept playing havoc and I couldn't get the cover down and seated before the seal kept falling off and ending up going all over the place
FINALLY managed to get the bugger back on and have had enough for tonight.
I'm pissed off.

Luckily the missus sensed I was getting somewhat excited earlier when she saw me jumping up and down in a strop in the garage and throwing my toys out the pram so the lovely lass got me some booze to calm me down a bit

So its time for me


On the bright side the valve clearances are factory pefect and if anything are just a smidge on the tight side so those won't need touching for a very very long time

Next time try silicone gasket, not to drink, but small dabs to keep the rubber seal in place.

That's what I usually would have done, but the tube of seal that I had has gone solid so was bummered
Managed in the end with some craftily placed dollops of Vaseline

A bit of Vaseline in the right place does wonders
