Help Required for dead bike
After Battery went flat and rescue bods managed to jump start bike, got a couple of miles from home instrument panel died a couple of times and then completely, when got home after massive back fire, then instrument panel, indicators etc all dead, and when hit starter button nothing
Replaced Rectifier for an R6 one (following thread on here) and put another battery in but still no joy, have lights but when try to start nothing apart from an electrical / rattling / flapping noise (not a great description I know) which I did not have before, any thoughts on what I should try next!
Thanks
Regulator / Rectifier Problem
Re: Regulator / Rectifier Problem
Whats the voltage of the battery you put in, get a meter on it and test it. Not a great description of the noise but could be the starter solenoid. Have you checked all fuses ? have you wired the new reg/rec in correctly, have you tested the generator, do all +ive and -ive leads have good connections..

Re: Regulator / Rectifier Problem
Do the lights dim when you try to start the bike?
Without hearing the actual noise, it sounds like your starter motor might be knackered

Re: Regulator / Rectifier Problem
Check the connector under the rubber hood on the starter motor for corrosion. Is the battery fully charged up? Is it a new one as R?R goond down will in all likelehood take out the battery as well.
You can test if the starter motor is working by shorting the starter solenoid or you can take the starter motor off the bike and use some thick wire to connect it to battery to see if if the starter will whizz round.
Be aware if the R/R did implode it can take out various other electrical components inc the ign module in the tailpiece.
With a multimeter follow the troubleshooting procedure in the downloadable & searchable PDF Service Manual for checking your charging system.

Chaps many thanks, I'll work through suggestions and let you know how I get on, although as a very novice mechanic I'm sure I'll be back with more questions

Re: Regulator / Rectifier Problem
The rattling noise is the relay trying to latch in and failing. This is usually because of low current flow- not necessarily low voltage.
Think of the flow of electricity- it has to leave the battery down one wire and flow through the various components, then down to earth and thence back to the negative battery terminal.
If any of those wires or components don't allow the current to flow properly, the circuit won't work properly.
As said above, weak points are the starter motor cable connection bolt, the main cable ( the thick one) running to the starter motor and the earth lead, as well as checking all connections.
Luckily, if the battery is good, and you've changed the RR to a good one, all the rest is just a case of swapping known good parts for the ones you have on now, if you can't meter each component out.
So even if you can't rebuild a starter motor, for example,, it's only two small bolts to unbolt it and fit another one. Try that and see if it's better, if not put yours back.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
Re: Regulator / Rectifier Problem
All sorted, after taking new rectifier off and testing and putting all back found one of the connectors lose, so remade that and all seems to be working now.
