Fly Wheel lightening ?
Re: Fly Wheel lightening ?
Scrub that, the transalp is 57.7mm and according to the service manual the vtr is 57.639mm minimum, so it looks like we're in business using the transalp flywheel with attached sprag and vtr starter gear.

Just popped down to the shed & measured up the starter gear sprag drive diameter, the part that fits into the one way bearing (I think that's what you mean) and its 57.8mm.
As for the puller, I bought a lorry wheel stud, worked a charm

Sweet, that just saved me a trip into the garage to measure one for you

Re: Fly Wheel lightening ?
Right then, if you have time on your hands, how about a better clutch?
I don't mind modifying the clutch casing, as long as the water pump still mounts up ok.
Or if it won't, I wouldn't be averse to an electric one, I suppose.....

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Popped to the shed again with verniers & it looks like the VTR sprag end flywheel hole is 34mm diameter & around 35mm for the crank taper lengthtempl8 wrote:Spot on, confident it'll fit

Any chance you could measure the Transalp sprag end crank hole diameter? Also the length of the crank taper?
Do the VTR flywheel measurements tally with the Transalp flywheel?

Right then, I haven't a problem with my clutch at the moment (not enough powertony.mon wrote:Right then, if you have time on your hands, how about a better clutch?

So you got me thinking, Sigma do one but are quite expensive. So I started looking at other options whilst waiting for a reply from Templ8 about the crank hole size & stumbled over this clip on the tube.

I don't think it will fit a VTR but some times you think Honda are withholding some pretty good ideas & this is off a 1985 bike

Re: Fly Wheel lightening ?
Roger Ditchfield can supply you with diaphragm plates to eliminate clutch grab.
But I think Tony is after a bit of Transalp comparison...

Thanks in advance.

Re: Fly Wheel lightening ?
Still awaiting the arrival of the puller but the hole in the transalp flywheel is 29.68mm at its largest point.
Re: Fly Wheel lightening ?
Puller arrived.
Unfortunately the transalp taper is different, so it's not going to fit.
Back to the drawing board

Re: Fly Wheel lightening ?
Well I've taken the plunge and machined my flywheel. The diameter is now 122mm, I've not taken anything off the width or the outer casing and it now weighs 5lb11oz

It's syrprising how much swarf has come off on the lathe, got a black bin bag of full of blue curls.
We'll see what difference it makes later
