I want to buy manual cam chain tensioners!!
Re: I want to buy manual cam chain tensioners!!
Sorry not replied in a good while. Thanks for the encouragement guys but my problem is this, I overthink things far too much and as a result I will spend the rest of my days riding my beloved storm paranoid that iv done something wrong! Unfortunately im just one of those guys that needs someone there to say "its fine".
Im sure that once iv seen how its done and someone has shown me, if I had to do it again id be fine. Unfortunately im not quite as brave as alot of you guys and need help with these sorts of things.
Obey the forum gods.

Whereabouts are you located? as there's often a willing helper who can mop your brow or there's workshop days where it can be done

Looking to buy some mcct, I am going to get my act together & fit the Firestorm cams. Sooner rather than later.
From who though is the question?
There's a rolling road just opened down the road from me & I would love to do a back to back run with my current setup with Varadero cams (Std cct) against VTR cams with the mcct fitted.
I can't be arsed fitting the mcct to the Varadero cams though, just for one dyno run
What do you recon? Worth it for one run with standard cct? Just for comparisons sake
Do you guys recon it will throw the jetting out with the cam swap

Straight swap.
Stop talking and get on with it

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Well they turned up last night so now iv got the small task of fitting them! I bought some high temp silicone to use as a gasket hope thats right. Still dont feel comfortable doin it myself.

i did them last year and followed cybercarls thread ( http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 83#p264315)
i was unsure about a lot of things but as i worked on the bike it all made sense and got easier as i went along
hurry up and get it done

told you not to but oh no you knew better
Re: I want to buy manual cam chain tensioners!!
Yeah thanks im just not the confident type when it comes to mechanical stuff. I might have a bash.
Re: I want to buy manual cam chain tensioners!!
Also while im at it, if I decide to try it myself do I need any particular tools. Iv got a fairly extensive toolbox bit any additional info or tips would be lovely!
Re: I want to buy manual cam chain tensioners!!
No specialist tools needed. As long as you have a fairly comprehensive tool kit ie the usual spanners, sockets, Allen keys, screwdrivers etc your good to go. If you really want to be fussy you could use a torque wrench and tighten every nut and bolt up to the required torque in the workshop manual, but unless you remove the cams for some reason (you shouldn't need to by the way) there are no nuts and bolts that are vital to be tightened to a specific torque, so your good to go. High temp Silicone will do the job. Make sure you give it time to dry before going for a proper run
Best advice I can give you is to take your time, don't rush, and double check everything as you go along and pay particular attention to the timing

Re: I want to buy manual cam chain tensioners!!
Thanks for the advice carl, iv decided to give it a go. I had an hour on it yesterday and iv stripped it down just about to take the cam covers off when I next get an opportunity. Wasnt too bad, the only thing I was going to ask was whats the best way of measuring the 5-7mm play in the chain when adjusting? I dont think I have the knowledge to guess!
Hopefully itll turn out ok. Iv used masking tape to mark what things are and from where and iv taken about 3,000 pictures on my phone to help when I put it back together!
Wish me luck and hopefully well both come out the other side.
