Cheers for all your help guys, it helps to know advice is on hand. Can I just ask though is the 5-7mm slack in the chain the total movement from the highest point to the lowest? Or am I wrong? Also how catastrophic is it if its a bit out?

Absolutely correct fella, 5 - 7mm total up/down movement.

Hold the ruler steady in a fixed position and push the chain down, then push the chain up keeping your eyes on a fixed point on the chain.

The total movement from lowest point to highest point should be 5 - 7mm

Andy this is getting silly now, your panicking too much. get it roughly between 5 and 7mm and you will be good to go.

For any catastrophic failure you would have to be seriously loose and by that I mean the chain flopping around all over the place. At worst it could go one of two ways but NOT likely with the method of installation your using by removing the cam cover and measuring with a ruler

At worst the chain would be so tight you end up with starting problems/screeching in which case you gonna sh1t yourself and not go any further. This is NOT going to happen using this method of installation. And second, it could end up too loose where you hear a little bit too much rattly chain with the engine fully warmed up. Yet again this is NOT going to happen using this method of installation. Either way if by some stupidity one of these two things occurred, it's nothing that can't be resolved quickly with a slight tweak which can be done without removing the cam cover and everything else again.......so stop panicking. It's no different from measuring the slack in your drive chain.

Its done! Huzzah! I got rescued by gabi who sat with me through it, and also did my tps sensor while he was at it! Absolutely top bloke and am forever in his debt!

So its done and it starts up and runs with no suspect noises so im happy!

Yeah I feel a bit better about doing jobs in the future although I feel so much better when someone's there to help.

Once you have done it once its easy. One thing you learn is how to strip the bike down very quickly for the future.

Next you will want to polish the headers. Just use nut splitters on the stud nuts

Yeah it is (to me) a big job but I would feel more confident in taking on again, its all about taking your time and checking what youre doing

Ill be leaving mine alone for a little while now. Just need to adjust the chain a bit, touch up a couple of stone chips and then ill wait for the weather to get a bit warmer.
