Paint quote
I got a quote yesterday to get my wheels and forks painted and was quoted £250 does these seem high or is it just me? Im not after candy colours or anything just white on the wheels and silver on the forks

Re: Paint quote
It's not just you, in my opinion it's also too expensive

It's sad that, in our blindness we gather thorns for flowers
Re: Paint quote
There probably are others who can do the job for less, but you really need to see some work they have carried out before letting them lose on your wheels and forks. Materials are not cheap when it comes to painting, plus there is a fair amount of work in preparation if it the job is done properly. Also that price may include remove and refit/balance tyres.
Out of interest, is that quote for dropping off the wheels and forks for them to work on
or you dropping off the bike to them
Chris.

Re: Paint quote
The price is for just dropping of the wheels ready to go and just the fork legs. He was recomended by the bike shop i use as i was told he does a very good job just wanted to ask on here before i save for the next month to pay for it!:)
Re: Paint quote
There's no harm in seeing what others have to say. I would say the fact your bike shop recommended them is a good start, IMHO it wouldn't be worth them recommending someone if they were rubbish,
Chris.

Re: Paint quote
Well exactly im happy to pay for a good job as im fussy about my bike looking straight and clean but don't have much or any actually exp with paintwork or how much it should cost so thanks for your input

Re: Paint quote
Believe me if they're good that price isn't far away. My mate is a painter and I know whats involved labour and paint wise!
SH#T HAPPENS!!!!!!!!
Re: Paint quote
Price is a bit high considering you want them painting
For 150 you could have them powder coated...
I'm a painter and don't charge that but then again...i dont do just one color I paint butterflies and stuff

Re: Paint quote
Wheels get abuse when changing tyres & forks are prone to get stone chips, its a fact of life.
If you pay a small fortune to get them painted you'll break your heart after every ride.
Have a go yourself, its not too big a job.
If you've got scabby bits, sand the bad bits with 360 grit paper till smooth.
If they're (ugly) Scotch pad (back of a dishwasher sponge) the whole wheel/fork down till they've smooth & all the shine has gone.
When ready to paint. Warm the parts with a hair dryer or heat gun till warm, not hot
Any rattle can primer/gloss will do, go expensive or cheap. Whatever you feel comfortable with.
Golden rule, Light coats. Too thick & the paint will run & chip easily when dry
once the primer has cured, flat with a scotch pad (back of a dishwasher sponge) again.
Warm again with heat gun or hairdryer then apply the top coat
I hold the wheels in-between two step ladders with a rod through the wheel which enables me to spin the wheel whilst painting to avoid any runs if the paint is too thick
I use Nitro Morse paint remover & start from scratch. some photos
Forks also jammed in the step ladder, easy to rotate & avoid runs also

Re: Paint quote
I would love to have a go would rather not spend the money but alas im in a second floor flat with no garage and next to no tools if anyone lives in hampshire with a garage and wants to lend a hand im sure i could return the favor with some beer tokens!:)
Re: Paint quote
I fit tyres all the time, the wheels don't get chipped or scratched, I take care when fitting them, I have a quality machine, If I did ever scratch or chip a wheel I would get it sorted, or if the wheel wasn't perfect to start with offer a discount for the trouble. It all depends where you get your tyres fitted, some don't take much care, if your levering your own on then yes it's inevitable that you will get chips and scratches.Varastorm wrote:Wheels get abuse when changing tyres & forks are prone to get stone chips, its a fact of life.

Re: Paint quote
I got a quote form a local painter for my wheels, subfame and fork lowers, If I did the prep work (rub them down) he wouild paint and lacquer for £100, this was in silver and not a specific one, just the closest match he had on the shelf.. you can get away with that on a storm as the painted silvers aren't really together (next to each other) no need for perfect matching.
I'm not getting the wheels done now, I'm getting subframe, clipon's and fork lowers so hopefully he'll charge me less than £100, wheels I'll do at a later date when I have more funds and time to prep them.

Forks are prone to stone chips

I do lever mine, they get abuse, but no chips

Re: Paint quote
It's the prep that is costing the money and the fact that your getting two colours mixed up, so that's two batches of paint being purchased. I'm inclined to agree with Sirch.
