vfr 800 handlebar conversion

Post by ned58 »

Hi there,
I have been thinking about fitting some higher bars to my storm, with vfr 800 bars is it necessary to cut the fairing down .If so are there any particular model vfr bars where you don't have to chop the fairing about
Many thanks
Ned

I think the VFR bars do require a bit of fairing nibbling. The late model VTR bars give a little lift without any cutting though, or some of the more elderly and less able members of the forum have changed to a top yoke conversion with Renthals. Give AMcQ46, Bigtwinthing or Lloydie a shout for more information. Just remember they are rather frail and may take time to respond!!

Did mine a few years ago - you need to adapt the bar end weights and holes for switchgear, but standard cables etc were fine. The fairing needs a bit of trimming if you don't want the bars to touch the tank on full lock, but some masking tape and a dremel is all you need. Basically I just trimmed off the two parts that drop down and made them straight. You'll get a bit more windblast over the screen, but a very worthwhile mod IMHO.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

I believe someone added extra bits of metal to the steering stops to save cutting the fairing. Something like 3mm thickness on each stop IIRC.

**EDIT**
This is the guy I was thinking of, take a look at this link:-

i knew a guy who cut a thread on them, then loctited and screwed 2 domed nuts on. That did work but lock was a bit poop.
missing the noise, not the vibes. However never say never!

That would be my way of adding stops. True about losing out on steering lock, but at least you have a choice, trim the fairing or lose some steering lock :)

i think you need to add something but securely to pass MOT. You can actually put a nut over them ( near the right size) and hit them on, they force over the stub bit and do stay on. You need to file them round to cut a thread but it is possible.

Ah ha, I misread your post Paul, I was thinking you meant drilling and tapping the steering stop for a bolt with a lock nut to go through (that is if there is enough metal in the stop to do that). That would mean the head of the bolt would then touch the frame stop rather than the stop on the yoke, if that makes any sense :)
