how important is the underside tank foam

after removing the fuel tank on my bike, I didn't notice fuel was trickling out of the overflow pipe, this went unnoticed for many hours, and as a result the foam on the underside has turned to mush.... :(
so I've removed it completely, my questions is, how important is it, what's it's purpose.
according to the ron ayers micro fiche, it's called a muffler, does this mean it's sound deadening?
how important is it?
and seen as replacing it is going to cost over £30 (for some poxy foam) do I need it???????
HEY YOU GUYS!!!!!!

Well some of mine is still there but it is not critical in any way.
At most it is to keep the tank from rattling on the airbox IMHO

just leave it to dry out if it gets fuel on it, it goes back pretty much to normal after a while.

Have you considered implants.

I can't see any real purpose for the foam accept cushioning.

And it's lighter without....
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
