In case you decide to ply with shimming the needles again, you need to remove the stockshim from the front needle and replace it with a 1mm thick shim, and epoxy one of the slide holes. Then put a 1mm thick shim under the rear needle but leave the stock shim in place. I used dynojet needle shims which are anout 0.5mm thick, so I ended up with 2 Dynojet shims under the front needle, and 2 dynojet shims plus the stock shim under the rear.

Hope this helps

I bought these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111551904791? ... EBIDX%3AIT

They measured up accurately and I have spares for playing around with if I need to.

ok, thanks for all the shimming ideas, I obtained another set of carbs with dynojet needles and three holes
drilled in sliders, 45 pilots and 190 mains front and rear.
so I stripped cleaned all carb parts, needles were set on 4th groove, so I left them there.
swapped 45s for 48s and refitted my standard mains as I took the bike up too 140 at the weekend,
so I know top end is ok !!!
Fired up no problem, engine tone sounded different to start with, sounded better, until I started messing.
Adjusted mixture screws to approx., and then Balanced the carbs when the engine was warm.
Took it for a test run and layby tune up, the road I use to test is a quietish road with a layby halfway
down so I do several runs undisturbed.
well this set up has not improved things, but not made things any worse

I forgot to say im running two long stacks and am thinking of going back to standard set up

Still seeking improvement, whats my next step, any thoughts ? would love to get things really flying,
would like to see improvements mainly in midrange

2 long stacks and extra slide holes =bad. In fact extra slide hole don't work at all AFAIK

DJ needles have a different taper than standard and DJ mains flow at different rates to standard mains eg a 180 DJ flows at a different rate to 180 standard jet.

I reckon there's too many variables to take into account there.

What happens if you run completely stock jetting, stock slides with the 48 pilots and 1.5 turns out on both pilot screws?

What air filter are you running?

And what exhaust?

Things run ok with stock slides, mains and 48 pilots with front set to 1 1/2 and rear 1 3/4.
Exhaust is Beowulf with Baffles removed and stock air filter
Im mainly experimenting with this spair set of carbs, guess im hoping to hit on some
winning formula, i dont mind experimenting, might try DJ needles with stock slides next
with one hole blanked off and refit short stack back on the front cyl.
The bike runs well but i think things can improve.

so im gonna compare both sets of carb set ups over the next week or so

1 Carb set no1: standard needles, front slide , one hole blocked, standard shim
rear slide, 1 extra shim
velo stacks, front short, rear long
48 pilots, standard mains

2 Carb set no2: DJ needles, set position 4 from blunt end, 3 holes in each slide
190 DJ mains, 45 pilots
2 long stacks, maybe revert to standard afterwards

Will test and report back :D

So both carbs have been on and both sets go well
Im struggling to set up the carbs, in the end set carb no2 up (45s) to about 2 turns, but still get popping below 3k
Carb set no 1 with 48s fited I get a backfire when starting on full choke and they are set 1 turn out !!
so I presume I need to go down to 45s.
Carb set no 1 have been washered, front needle has standard washer, plus 1x keilhen washer
rear needle has standard washer, plus 2x keilhen washers
Also front slider hole has been filled , standard short stack fitted
midrange both sets go well, but I think modded carb no1 has the edge

As I said im struggling to adjust the pilots, apart from fully wound in when the revs drop noticeably

Im thinking I wanna persevere with the standard needles and washer set up

What do you think of the set up of both sets of carbs

Opinions please carb experts !! :D

So carb set no1 was on the bike for about a month and ran ok
no real excitement,slight improvement maybe

Fitted carb set no2 today,with a K&n filter, 48s and 2 long stacks
I was expecting problems running with the K&N but all appears well
Seamed to pick up better around 3k (something to do with the 3 holes in the needle slider ???)
and no flat spots !!

Gonna give carb set no2 a good run at the weekend hopefully

Anybody got any comments/suggestions/criticism of my set up
