Water pump question

Hunting a rattle, I've finally gotten around to whipping the pump and clutch cover off.
The pump impeller feels reasonably ok in the bearing although not quite as smooth as the low mileage replacement cover and pump.
What I was a little surprised at, was just how slack the pump drive chain was. 8O Are these designed to be pretty slack as standard??

They are all like that. I guess things tighten up a bit under temperature.
