Installing YTX14-BS

Post by RoGuE »

I got my Firestorm a few weeks ago and have been having issues with the battery, so decided to get a new one after bouncing a few ideas off people on here.

From reading on here, I was expecting to have to remove the battery case lid to accommodate the bigger battery, however, I've noticed a couple of wires attached to the case lid. From inexperience, I'm not sure if this is the norm of if its something to do with the alarm. If i was to hazard a guess, it would be that its some sort of detector for when the seat is removed when the alarm is activated?

Some pics to help

So my question is - if i remove the lid to fit the new battery - if this bit is what i think it is, is the alarm screwed? Would i need to disconnect the whole thing? Any workarounds?

Any insight appreciated

well I can tell you that there is not one on my non - alarmed storm. it does look a bit like a sort of home made switch??

I don't know what your opinion of bike alarms is but I have had one once and it kept making my battery go flat so I would,nt want another.

could the alarm be the root cause of your battery problems ??

That looks like a simple trigger switch that sets the alarm off if the seat is removed. The same kind that you get on car doors so that when you open the door the courtesy light comes on. You can either relocate it making sure that the trigger is released only once the seat is removed or you could bypass it by joining the two wires together. I simple scotchlock would do if you don't want to disconnect the wires. Every thief should have one in their pocket for cases like this where the wire are easily accessible from the side before seat removal. So basically what I am saying is....that it's not much use where it is anyway. It would be better off relocated towards the other end of the seat near the seat latch.

Personally I would get rid of it all together. It looks like a household alarm trigger rather than a vehicle alarm. Absolute crap or something from the 1930's  Look at the un-insulated dodgy/bad solder connections.

The White connector block goes to you rear brake switch.

Have you tried taking the foam pads out of the battery box and see if the lid shuts then

Thanks for the comments.

Going to go out at lunch to see what the fit is like - will see about removing the pads.

I agree that this switch thing does seem a bit amateur-ish (especially for a system that is meant to only be installed at a dealership). I might just remove it and join the two wires together if the battery case lid does need to go.

The lid definitely has to go.

I'm clueless when it comes to electrics - but i presume i could just connect the two black wires that are going into the switch (see 3rd pic), remove the switch altogether and it would that would complete the loop making the alarm think the seat is in place?

Edit: Just fastened the switch down. Will do as a quick fix.

That looks like the type of switch that Datatool used to supply with the old Datatool 2 and System 3 alarms. Looks like it was soldered up and installed by a monkey though!

The switches are actually good quality despite their looks. I used one for years on a set of Mikuni RS flatslides as a WOT switch to cut the nitrous on my drag bike if I rolled off the throttle
