Rattle on the overrun

Post by StewartR »

So I reckon I should throw an earplug free ride into my routine every now and then. Normally I never leave home without them but took an unusually short ride today so didn't bother...and noticed an intermittent and feint but still worrying rattle from the back right of the engine. Pretty sure it's only on the overrun - it certainly is when the bike isn't moving.

Any thoughts?

Bike is a 2000 with 12k miles, standard CCTs with stopper mod and fresh oil.

My guess would be cct fail! But you can over think/listen sometimes and convince yourself there's an issue!!! :?

I can tell you now, providing the Stopper Mod has been carried out correctly you will definitely know when a CCT has failed, the noise is not something you'll be questioning. However you could have a CCT that is getting a bit lazy (the spring is getting weak) and therefore is not taking up the cam chain slack as it does normally. But then again it could be something else you're hearing, at least with the Stopper Mod done you should be safe enough if a CCT does fail. When I had one fail (with the S/M fitted) I was able to ride my bike home,

Thanks for the replies guys.

It's definitely not a CCT failure, not yet at least. This is just the hint of trouble down the line - The problem is that down the line includes a 2-3k mile tour of Austria and I don't want this rattle coming with me.

I had a idle rattle on my bike a couple of years ago that turned out to be the stopper rattling inside the CCT. I had used hollow aluminium rod and it didn't have a very big contact area due to the hollow centre and it had been wearing with vibration I till it was getting enough room to rattle!

Using a steel bolt shank these days an no problem. But like Chris says some times the CCTs get lazy and don't take up the chain slack instantly

I realise the chain is on the lefthand side, but what about the chain being too slack, it could be touching the link pipe on the overrun, or seeing as it's intermittent, the chain only touches the link pipe when you go over a bump or pit in the road on the overrun :?:

Good point AMcQ,

Chris.

Stopper is steel - the plain shoulder for a bolt. I'll try and get something on YouTube or Soundcloud. Sods law says this rattle goes into hiding until I roll into Calais :)

I don't think it's clutch rattle - sure I had the clutch in when I was gunned the engine when I pull up after realising the noise was there but I will double check
