CCT Failure???

Post by Roly »

One of my storms still has auto cct's, just attempted a ride out...... but! Didn't get 100 yds when load rattle and cut out.
Engine was warm before i set off, engine is a belter with no rattles (before!) Wont turn over on starter.
Seemed to happen 'off' throttle circa 60mph in 3rd slowing. 1st obvious suspect is cct but also wondering if starter maybe engaged and threw a wobbler. Before i go further. .... any comments?

Im actually an old mechanic and race car builder so know which end of my hammer hurts most! Would be grateful of inforrmed comments.

Thanks

Did it sound like this?

Don't try and start it until you rectify the issue. Have a read of this > http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=36575

Thanks Wicky, appreciate the superfast reply (brilliant forum :D )

I'll try and look shortly. The fact the engine was slowing ie the camchain would be not under load seems to me it would likely be cc failure. Without some spannering its guess work of course.

Visually the rear cct has been done and possible rear head done, front defo not done. May be cheaper to get 2nd hand motor :( horrible noise!

When rolling off the throttle is precisely the time when the CCT will let go by not being under tension is when it will jump several teeth...

9 time out of 10 it will be the front cct that has failed, Tony is the only person I know that has lost both front and rear cct's.

Tony will be able to step in, I think he said £250 notes for parts, maybe a little less depending on the values damaged(but it is usually the exhausts that get battered).

I don't think that your going to get a spare lump for the price of replacement parts, and if you do get a cheap one, it maybe becuase it's an non runner(cct failure)

Exactly where from? Seems difficult to search for current suppliers....

Not both at the same time, I might add.......
Cost is usually two 2nd hand inlet valves (£20 each from David Silver) ( or you can buy a cheap complete rear head and you can strip the valves from that) plus a head gasket (genuine Honda one is less than £30 plus VAT) and some manual cct's-or new Honda ones and then stopper them.

Less than £120 with new parts, depending on how much you spend on cct's. But if you're unlucky you also have to replace the ex valves on that head.

If you're really unlucky you may have cracked a guide, if so buy a complete front head.
If you're really, really unlucky the valve head snaps off and destroys the piston, if so buy a replacement engine.

But four out of five times it's just two inlets.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
