chain splitter

Post by bazzashadow »

borrowed a chain splitter/riveter off my local motorcycle shop for my sons bike the other day.
but was thinking of buying one and was wondering about your thoughts on what one to go for?
would like cheap as it will not get used much
I borrowed one like this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motorcycle-He ... 3ceaef99f1
but was thinking about one like this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BERGEN-TOOLS- ... 1948103868?
thought the way this one goes round the chain instead of a c shape would make it stronger
thanks for any advise

Just take the swingarm nut and footpeg hanger off and slip the old chain off. Rivet the new endless chain off the bike and slip it on. Reasemble remembering to retorque swing arm nut back to spec.

Or just get a cheap angle grinder to remove old riveted chains.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

I use one like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-NC-750- ... 20f6384b27 wouldn't use anything else, but not much help to you, I'd say go for the heaviest duty one you can afford.

I do agree with you popkat
but for how much I would use it
and it was not the splitting I had trouble with (used grinder and punch)
it was the putting back together(riveting ) that it came in handy for

That tool does the lot, although I still use a grinder to take the pins down. I use it for work so it paid for itself eventually.

Yeh but by the time you have purchased a few cheaper ones because they broke one may as well have bought a good one to begin with. It will last a lifetime and will work on all bikes. You also know that the rivet is secured (rolled over) properly. Something that always plays on my mind after just fitting a new chain.

As Wicky says, just take off footpeg assy, remove old chain complete, no need for splitter
To revit new link on i bought a cheap set in a red box off ebay for 10 quid.
Just used the rivet/plate fitting part of the set (which worked fine)

Happy days :D

It is one of those tools that if you are going to buy one, get yourself a decent one or don't bother.

Everyone has their own favorite but I use this one and have for years: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RK-Motorcycle ... 5d5860df61
