Rear Brake Rebuild

Post by thunderbolt »

Some of you would know I have done the CBR954 front brake upgrade.

So having such good stoppers on the front now I thought I should at least check out the rear brake.

This is what I found;

Image

Not good, a GOOD cleanup in store.

In the picture below the rubber boot seems to have some damage!! Can someone enlighten me about the length of the rubber boot? Is it short in length and only sits on the end of the metal bush or does it pass through the bush and therefore quite long?

Image

On some disc brakes the rubber boot extends the whole length of the support plate and the caliper pin/shaft slides back and forth in the rubber boot which has liberal amounts of grease in it. I am not sure this is the method that Honda uses. I think the forward pin slides in a metal bush.

Does the rubber boot need to be replaced?

Has anyone found it a challenge to remove the circlip that holds the brake pedal on its shaft. You have to practically remove the swing arm to get at it.

How do you adjust the rear brake pedal for height? There does not seem to be much adjustment and it's extremely hard to get at it when mounted on the bike.

All advice appreciated as usual.

Thanks

BTW I have a braided line for the rear as well as HH pads to fit.

P.S. Please no discussions on whether or not to use the rear brake when riding. I have seen many fruitless discussions on this topic, especially on CBR Forums.
Cheers
Don

Yes the old one is knackered - just pull it out.

Thanks Bazza, I will check out the condition of the piston after I have cleaned it up and it damaged I will certainly look at getting one from the SP1.

You could use a bit of emery cloth to take the top layer of pad off. But I wouldn't have used HH in the rear. They do have a tendency to lock the rear end up. That's what I've found with them anyway but other people may say different.
