Increasing the rev limit.

Post by Varastorm »

I have been running the Varadero with VTR cams for a few miles now & have noticed that the power comes in later @ 6-7000rpm, like a little power band when it comes on cam.

Firstly, I know the loom & black boxes(1 on a Varadero) (2 on the VTR) are very different.

My question is, is there a simple way of increasing the rev limit on these black boxes?

Or do I have to look into splicing a VTR loom into a Varadero's :wtf:

I have looked into retarding the cam timing via slotting the cam wheels to give me access to the extra power the cams can give me.

But I thought I would ask, just in case there's a nice simple answer to be had

IIRC There are HRC 'race' ones or clones that are programmable - with rev limit restrictions removed at the risk of overrevving as I think happened to someone or other on a dyno once...

There should be specific threads somewhere over on Superhawk.com or similar here. The Firestorm engine and associated gubbins would give you approx 100-105 horsies, which would be a significant boost from your 90 odd (93 IIRC) which is still about standard for a Varadero even with your fettling. If you go the firestorm engine transplant route then there's even more potential for increased horsies (120+) depending how much wonga you throw at it in performance parts. With a program of weight loss on the weighty Varadero in conjuction with gaining 100bhp that would seem feasible and reasonable way to gain performance.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Ignitech ECU unit gives you full access to everything related to ignition, including adjustable rev limit. But not to do it as homework.

As has been posted, there is no way to mod the stock unit.

The options from there to change the rev limit (from the stock VTR 10,3K) are:

The HRC unit (Which mik_str was the unlucky huckleberry to prove the HRC box has no limiter)

Or the Ignitech ECU which is the way to go if you decide you need to make a ECU change.

Or you could buy a Firestorm and save quite lot of money and effort.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I thought it wouldn't be easy, but I had to ask.

I have since read Mik_str's old posts on the http://www.superhawkforum.com about the Ignitech ECU, & they didn't inspire me with any confidence at all.

I'll keep at it & might see if I can amalgamate both looms, my mate used to be a pro at things like that

I will put ignitech in my bike. They do top quality stuff, but customer service is not the best. I can try to help if you would be interested, it should be a bit easier for me.

Just notice, Mick had probably faulty alternator when he tried to get it work .... He had issue with new gauges as well.Without help of experienced engine builder, like Roger is, it is not worth to try.

You could always have the Honda one changed or de-restricted.

I'm not sure I would trust this one.

I'm sure you know this already but don't confuse cam timing with ignition timing.
