Going to be changing the head gasket on my front head, its an early bike,
97 imported 2001 so may not
Match what is in a parts catalogue, are the vtr
Head gaskets all the same through 97-2003?

Early and late front head gaskets are the same. Same part number.

There's not much cost difference between an OM and Pattern part. IMO this is one of those cases where it's best to go with the genuine Honda part.

Head gaskets , all ways use genuine.

Actually I found last week that genuine Honda were cheaper.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Does anyone know if the Varadero & VTR Head gaskets are different thicknesses?

Dunno, but VTR ones are les than 1mm thick.
Have a look at some old one of yours for the xl.
But I think it more likely that the piston is a different design.
