Chris.
Must have slipped Pete's mind, the cylinder you're working on does as Pete says need to be at TDC but it must be on the compression stroke and to make absolutely sure it is you need to remove the cam/rocker covers. If its not, when you remove the tensioner the cam chain will jump off the sprockets driving the camshafts, then you will have a big job on your handsPete.L wrote:I'd bang one in Alan,
you know what it costs to have one fixed after they go (and yours was cheep compaired to some) and the front is prone to the same collapse.
All you need do is make sure the front cylinder is at TDC when you whip out the old one so the valve springs dont cause the cams to rotate.

My 98 model had done nearly 18000 miles when I got a thorough service before departing on it to Spain for about 6 months - the garage did say the CCT`s would need checking for the next service and probably replaced and they had "knocked them in" as the chain was a bit loose. On the second day I was heading towords Zaragoza on my way to Barcelona for the MotoGP races doing a comfy 70 on an A road when I got the really loud clatterring sound. Got off the road as quick as I could thinking I`d thrown a valve, but it turned out to be the front CCT. Luckily I hadn`t damaged anything else apparently and 2 new tensioners were fitted, new coolant etc, 8.5 hours labour - 300 quid in Zaragoza - they even cleaned it, so I got off lighter than other people here!
If anyone wants to see my blog about my travels in España on the VTR and whether there are any more gremlins, then check my profile.
¡Hasta Luego!
