General running
General running
Hi
Had the storm for a while now, the thing is.... do they sll struggle at low revs or is it just mine.
It really struggles around town 15-30 mph. My othe bike is a vfr but that is great at town riding. It will pull 5th gear at 25mph whereas the vtr needs seecond.
Is it the bike or just my riding style that needs to be altered.

Re: General running
Just use the right gear all the time.
Why try to use a gear way too high at low speeds anyway?
It's just as wrong as trying to leave it in second on the motorway.
It'll do it, but it sure doesn't like it.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
Re: General running
Make sure your drive chain + sprockets are in tip top condition inc adjustment and cush drive. Plus make sure carbs are balanced. Then try not to lug it at low speed in high gear too much as you'll stress the drive - try and use the gearbox Honda supplied.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Re: General running
Thanks for the replies.
So I take it that they're all like this then?
I change up gear depending on the exhaust sound, and am amazed at how low the revs actually are.
Must change riding style
Must change riding style
Must change riding style
Must change riding style
Got to admit the chain and sprockets could do with changing. I'll balance the carbs and do the tps at the same time.

Re: General running
The VTR may not be as smooth as the VFR, don't think its meant to be !
Mine didn't run to well at slow speeds , I was always up and down the gearbox chugging through town etc, but get everything
set up and things run nicely, TPS does make a difference.

I have a 99 VFR and 97 VTR. I think the VTR is better at low revs (2-3 krpm) than the VFR with a lot more pull, smoother and easier to modulate (carbs vs FI ). I have a stock but high mileage VTR but with well balanced carbs and TPS set at 500 ohms.
Its a different story above 6 krpm. VFR all the way!

Re: General running
I should really have said I only struggle in traffic. Its the stop/start, up and down the box.
Most bikes I have ridden will pull third gear in traffic, changing down to second when needed. But the storm mainly uses first and second.

Re: General running
Sound like a common thing when people hear "V-Twin"
They think Harley engine and want to lug the poor thing down and then wonder why it has no power.
This is not a push rod. 2 valve engine but a DOHC 4 valve engine.
Which means it want to spin to make any power.
This engine should be run at 3K and above at all times.
To run at lower RPMs will and does cause damage to the engine by lugging it down.
Would you drive you car around at under 1K RPM all the time and then wonder why it has no performance and is full of carbon deposits?
While most would never do that, many do the same thing to their bikes.
The VTR engine can spin at 10K RPM all day long with no issues (that is why the rev limiter cuts in at 10.3K RPM) and the rev limiter is there for a reason..... that is how fast the engine can spin without causing damage.
So if you insist on running around at 2-3K your poor bike will die of boredom and will be so clogged with carbon deposits that it will die long before and engine that is taken out and given the beans from time to time.
In closing, ti keep it simple, you want more power and you want a good long engine life, then twist the throttle pookie

Loud pipes don't save lives, knowing how to ride your bike will save your life.

Re: General running
I found mine was easier to ride in town after going up 1 tooth on the rear sprocket.

Early VFR better than later, eh Roger

love the airbox sound on mine when pulling from low revs from 3rd gear up.
As for the storm, you can work it a bit with fine clutch work but wouldn't recommend it if in traffic for long, just leave it in 2nd through the slow traffic stuff.

Cant beat the early vfr for that.popkat wrote:artee wrote:My vfr is a carburated 87.Cadbury64 wrote:I have a 99 VFR and 97 VTR. I'm quickly learning fine clutch control.
I dont tend to ride in "rush hour" traffic as I work shifts. But I hate it when I have to.
