No rest for the OCMD'ers......

Post by mik_str »

Inspired by this:

So, what is it? you ask. It's a frame brace developed by the Japanese high performance firm HARC-Pro. It goes where the lower subframe mounts to the frame and acts to reinforce the frame.

Now then, behold the "mikstr-ized" version:

(NB: Disregard the HRC sticker, it's on there as I have a stock of them.... need to use them somewhere, lol)

Will try it and see if/how it affects the bike.

Will keep you posted (of course, have to wait for bike to get fixed and be back on the road, which should be in a couple weeks, at least I hope)

Waiting for fitted pics with interest.

I remember those...... lol they were too over priced to ever pick one up to see how it worked so it will be interesting to hear your views on it

I used a section of aluminum tubing for the main section (20mm OD, 10mm ID), then mated it to two sections of 35mm long (19mm OD) M10 threaded collars. These are spaced apart by small wedged of cut Al tubing (25mm OD, 20mm ID).... all welded up.

It will be very interesting to see if you can feel a difference when riding.

There might be a detectable difference for trackday bikes but let's see what Mik's impressions are.

I find that you often "notice" an improvement after fitting something or making a change, it's hard to be subjective.
I then leave it there for a few days and reverse the change to see if you can feel a difference in the opposite direction as well....

Worth a try, like everything else.

Nice one Micky  glad to see you are back on track
That must be a precision fit job, either that or you have a box of suitable shims ready to go :)

Good luck with it, I look forward to hearing your opinion as the others are, when the time comes,

Chris.

Well I have given this one a little bit of thought and yes went out and pulled up a seat and looked at the bike for a bit....
and IMHO this is a good thing for a street bike and I will have one.... now the only question is does Mik have a source or do I need to get it fab'ed myself.

Why do I think it will be a plus for a street bike..... well again,IMHO, this is a step below bracing the frame (which would eliminate the need for this bit) and for bikes with a braced swinger and a good front end this should help out.

If you are racing or doing die hard track work, then brace the frame but for most street riding (or in my book under a ton through the bends) I have found the frame behave rather well but does "twitch" a bit if you start pushing hard.

Now back to this bit, what I see it doing is acting the same as a fork brace on a standard front end.
What I mean is that while it doesn't add much stiffness in and of itself, it does tie the two sides together which does make a big improvement.

Where does the load come from, you might ask?......Well from you the rider.
The more aggressive you ride, the more you load the sub-frame.
Even if you are only 10 stone, it can be a big load as you need to add in the length of the lever back to you.

Again IMHO, like a fork brace, if you ride aggressive you should see a difference.
If you don't push, then I doubt you would ever notice a difference.

Though I do have a question..... in the pic of the original part there are a pair of collars on the mounting bolts.
Are these to take up the space of the sub-frame if you are not running the stock unit?

I could be just full of you know but it looks like a good thing to me and like I said I will track one down or fab one sometime soon

Knock up a few, if you're making or having them made, and someone will buy them.

I was looking at the original Harc.Pro brace & it's weld signifies it's either titanium, stainless or polished mild steel. I'd say titanium judging the comments about the price they were asking when they were for sale

I am not criticizing yours in any way Mik, it looks the dogs bollox, but you might not get the full benefit from an aluminium one
