LH grip came loose. There's a hole in the clipon.

Post by KermitLeFrog »

Nice long run in the pouring rain the other day and towards the end my LH handlebar grip came loose. Not a major drama. Pour a bit of petrol inside it, slide it back on. When stuck fix it up with tie wire. However, with the grip off I noticed a drilled hole in the clipon, out towards the end. What's it for?

The hole in the RH clipon is there to index the throttle body. What's the hole on the LH clipon for?

TIA
Ian

I think it holds the barend mount in. Clip comes up from the inside.

Aaaah, that makes sense. Never had any bar ends on the bike. Might get some to stop things sliding off.
Cheers

I'm now confused. Looking through previous threads and what's on sale there appears to be two types of bar end.

1. The one that virtually everyone is selling that uses an expanding bung and is usally made of aluminium.
2. A rare item that simply has a screw which presumably screws into an existing block inside the bars. Looks like steel, original equipment and looks like a reasonable weight.

My bars have nothing inside them at all and I can't see the point of having a lightweight ally bar end that will probably fall out.

Question: Where can I get some bar ends with a decent mass to them which will stay in place. Ideas appreciated.
TIA

Std bars have an internal weight in them...It's about 5'' long & the std bar end weights screw into them.

I had a bike that had non standard weight fitted & the internal weights had just been pushed in to allow the non std ones to be fitted.

If you have them shoved down a long bolt can be used to screw into the thread & then pull the weights back out.

If you have no weights at all look on the evil-bay even if you have to buy 2 left hand bars the weights will be the same & can be removed & then fitted to yours.

Oh BTW the hole in the clip on you mentioned is for the internal weight, there will be two at the end of the bar top & bottom, the weight has a clip with two tangs, these locate in the holes from the inside to keep the weight in place.

To remove the weight push the tangs in with a small flat blade then use a bolt to screw into the thread in the weight & pull it out...it is quite tight but will come out.

Thanks for the help. eBay not very helpful. Have put out an enquiry for OEM parts.

There are some nice depleted uranium ones on Amazon that will help to deaden vibration.

They don't polish up very well, but glow faintly at night, which is a safety aid, as well as deterring thieves.

Only trouble is that if you turn the bars too suddenly they are designed to go right through the tank.....
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Go onto Ebay copy and paste (or type) the number in the search bar then hit enter,

Chris.

This should help too. A PDF on how to remove the clip on bar end weights, dampers, anti-vibration weights, whatever you like to call them.
http://www.manicsalamander.com/media/51 ... emoval.pdf

Note that similar anti vibration damper weights are also fitted inside the tubes on the front subframe where your mirrors attach. You will see a round plastic cap in the end of the tube. If you pick this out, the weights are slid down inside there. This helps with fairing vibration and having a steady image in your mirrors  ......or is that steady elbows in your mirrors
