Are All Rear Mudguards the Same?

I am after a rear mudguard for my '03 model as the previous owner cut the number plate section away to give it a more sporty look.

I have found a '98 model one for sale but it has a different part no. than my '03 model.

The '98 model Part # is 80100-MBB-6700
My '03 model Part # is 80100-MBB-D40

My question is are all the rear guards the same? Will a '98 model guard fit an '03 model Firestorm?

Is the rear frame on all the models the same?

Possibly plastic moulding is subtly different to accommodate taller battery and IIRC CDI electonic black boxes at tail end were repositioned.

Ideally someone can eye ball underneath the seat of an early and late model side-by-side to confirm.

Edit: Or there might not be any difference between the two apart from the side reflector stalks (as fitted on US? models)

Right as the owner of both a '98 F & an F2 I can tell you that the std undertrays are different...

New will fit old but the differences are where the ECU & Igniter boxes fit.

On the F as you know they are stacked at the back of the U/T by the light. The two plastic tabs that the rubber harness fits on to these are absent on the F2...

On the F2 these boxes are mounted one on each side of the subframe.

The loom, subframe & std U/T are all slightly different to the F to accommodate this.

So an F2 onwards U/T will fit but you will have to find a way of securing the EUC & Igniter box into the rear end...Velcro pads maybe...

IIRC the other electrics at the rear end...Left side, Starter relay & Right side, R/R & flasher relay are mounted in much the same place F or F2.

Ha ha just realised that your the other way round...You have an F2 & want to fit an F version...DOH !

Yes it will fit straight on the only difference will be the two tabs at the rear that hold the boxes in place...Cut em off more storage space...

Can anyone tell me what this large hole in the rear of the rear mudguard is for? It is above where the number plate would go.

Thats been modded by the PO then as its the same on the the later bikes as std.

OH!! Thanks for that. I was just coming to that realisation as I had read both of the Owner's Handbooks for the early and late model and they were both saying the same thing. Mine was certainly modded then. It works ok though. It might be open to more grit and road grime though. I reckon it was modded because the PO cut the rear part of the mud guard away and raised the number plate right up under the rear tail light which would have covered the original key hole. Hence him having to move it to under the seat.
