Output Shaft Bent?

Post by Mav617 »

Hi,

I fitted new chain and rear drive sprocket to the TRX. I didn't replace the front as it looked decent and I couldn't shift the bugger with the wife holding the rear brake on and a two foot breaker bar. When turning the rear wheel the chain goes tight then slacks off again, There doesn't seem to be any play at the rear sprocket, so I;m thinking it's maybe a bent output shaft which will be mega expensive to fix. Any other suggestions, is it worth replacing the wheel bearings, sprocket carrier bearing and cush drive rubbers (all seem reasonable)?

I think you answered yer own question, it's not recomended putting a new chain on old sprocket, the old front sprocket WILL have worn to the old chain even though it looks ok, usually gives the tight slack chain issue you have. I really doubt the output shaft will be bent

so I;m thinking it's maybe a bent output shaft
Can you see if the output sprocket wobbles when it rotates?
When turning the rear wheel the chain goes tight then slacks off again
tight spots in chain ?
wife holding the rear brake on and a two foot breaker bar
You hold the brake and the wife wields a 4 foot breaker bar / scaffold pole...

Should always fit C&S as a set IMO! But even after fitting a full set there will still be a very slight tight/slack spot in chain! Even on my brand new ER6 There was very slight difference! Can't imagine output shaft being bent :?

Just cannot get that sprocket off, the thing just turns, whether in gear or not, no way to lock it off?

Put a piece of wood (broomhandle or sumfink) in the wheel between the spokes and against swingarm so when the wheel tries to rotate it will be solidly locked. Simples

Then maybe a quick applcation of heat from a blow torch on the stubborn bolt just in case it was thread locked.

Strong timber or padded steel through back wheel onto underside of swing arm! Also try using a quality ( Snap on, Milwaukee ) impact gun on sprocket bolt?

You're a star, thanks Mac. Thanks for all the replies fellas, I'll get a local bike shop to hit it with an impact gun.

Mav,
While I whole heartedly agree replacing a new chain with both new sprockets is the way to go, I have a feeling one of our members had a problem like yours, it turned out to be a faulty brand new rear sprocket. IIRC the rear sprocket was not sitting central on the sprocket carrier, the bolt holes were not in the right place, hence when the rear wheel was rotated it caused the chain to go tight then slack. Certainly worth replacing the front sprocket I agree, but also check the rear sprocket for what I have mentioned might be a good idea,

Chris.
