Fuel Tap Leaking when turned on - need a repair kit I guess?

Post by Tempest »

Ok, well, as planned, I took my fuel tap off tonight (slight leak recently). Could not pull filter out with the whole tap as it was stuck mid-way and did not wish to force it (looked old!)

Cleaned everything I could do. The internal black rubber diaphragm looked a bit iffy in places, but hoped would be ok.

Refitted everything, the square on/off dial/tap turned to off position.

Put in 5 litres fuel (wanted to give a good slosh around inside) no leaks so far.
Turned the round tap to on with a spanner, and fuel started coming out of 3 places :(

Both large side tubes (which connect to the carbs) and the little downward facing hole (not the little side one) all three were leaking petrol out!

DAM.. that's not supposed to happen is it?

Drained the tank (mouthful of fuel - of course!) and took things apart again, Pulled the filter out, it was split a bit (split a LOT now!) and the tap unit apart, and yes, the rubber diaphragm does look worn with some distortion.

So, would I be right in thinking I just need a repair rubber kit for inside (two bits of rubber?) / bit of plastic? bit of metal in between then both?

And what about the filter?

Thanks....

Oh and also.......... Can I test/run the bike by just having, say, washing up liquid bottles with petrol in them, feeding the pipes to the carbs to fire up the bike?
Willa firestorm work via this method? as there are many other pipes connected to the tank?
I'd like to reconnect the carbs and run a test, but as I say, the tank is, at the moment, out of commission (so to speak)

Just checking...

I guess this is what I need yes?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-VTR1000 ... 3f3ce8611b

There is a bit of silver metal (approx. 10mm dia aluminium) between the two bits.... Do I assume I keep that bit and attach just the two new rubber bits to it?

On the fuel filter Front......

Had a quick look around, seems people say they are a rip off price wise, and just to cut, and fit normal cheap throw away ones inline on the pipe from the tank to the carbs.
And recommendations?

Thanks :)

I think you might have put the tap back together wrong, leaking like you say is free flowing, it shouldn't leak any more than it did before you stripped it. Did you try the suck/blow thing on vacuum so you knew the diaphragm was moving ?, did all parts go back in ?.

you might as well just get a new filter, iirc they're about £30, if you run inline filters you would need 2 of them. I replaced mine with a standard filter.

you can run auxiliary tanks, you need to block the end of the vacuum tube then it will run ok.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, it all went back together ok.

I did clean all metal faces well, and I popped the rubber parts in the ultrasonic and a lot of black was coming from the suspect area.
My theory is the rubber was breaking down, but still held in place to a degree, if you see what I mean, and when all cleaned away, it was actually worst than when started (a theory!)

Yes, £30 was a figure I saw, just annoying when you can simply get a simple fuel filter for a couple of £ from any general store....

Thanks for the tip on a temp tank.
The vacuum pipe... That's the small bore one, that attaches to the small connector on the side... yes?

I did suck and blow yes, and heard some movement.

Ok, well they say a picture is worth a thousand words..... :)

SO just took some close up photo's..... Methinks it's fairly obvious now from these close ups where the problem is!

If you replace the filter with inline ones and have no filter in the tank all the crap at the bottom of the tank will go though to your filters, more likely to block the tap, you'll need to clean them often and fine particles will get through. The standard filter is best for the Job. I grumbled at £30 but well it is only £30 and it's as Honda intended.

Yes the small bore pipe from the fuel tap, just put a small bolt in it to blank it so you can test run the engine.

The diaphragm doesn't look to good, maybe ultrasonic cleaning is not the best thing for it, i thought you would put just the bare tap in as the material is very fine.

Thanks.

Taken a bit of a gamble, but found a complete pre-owned Tap, with Filter and (hopefully) better diaphram all as a complete unit for a good price, and seller has 14 day money back, so fingers crossed should just be a simple swap over when it arrives :)
