Sump plug / washer

I noticed the washer was missing when I changed the oil last week.

When I ran the engine, the plug got a tiny bit of oil on it, so I took it out and put in a little copper washer. Wasn't a specific bike one, it was a plumbing type 3/8s copper washer.

I though that would seal it, but it still gets a tiny drip of oil around the plug after a good blast.

Does anyone know if they need specific washers, either diameter or thickness or material?

The right size copper washer helps - presumably this is for your Suzi so you'll need to find the appropriate size to fit. Though if you've fitted a new one (that fits close enough) and it still leaks then I'd be concerned the sump plug has been overtightened causing a crack in the sump around the threads.

Copper or aluminium washers are ok, they shouldn't be too loose around the thread, and not a thin type you want good surface area, by that I mean for example ID of 14mm OD of 20mm as opposed to ID of 14mm and OD of 16mm, a good fit is best, I also use a steel washer that has a built in rubber seal, these I find are good too.

If your washer fitted well you should maybe check around the sump bolt area for a small crack where it's been over tightened before.

Copper age hardens after time and does not seal well, it needs to be at least 1mm thick you could heat it with a blow torch until glowing red then drop into water and this would make it malubale and you could reuse it but its easier to replace it with new
