I'll admit, not 100% sure on this.......
======== Short version of long explanation below =========
Temp gauge needle looks like it's decided to stop moving. However Fan still kicks in fine and cools engine correctly.
Corrosion perhaps on terminals that drive this needle you think? Where do I need to look for the connectors
==================================================================================================
Basically, my Temp gauge has always worked. Fan kicks it when the gauge gets to half way (which is what it should do)
Now, as some of you many know, I'm just literally getting my Storm back up and running after cleaning the carbs of sticky fuel, and also tonight sorting out my fuel tap with a new fuel filter and Diaphragm.
Now, the other day (Had done the carbs, but not got the fuel tap sorted) I ran the bike stationary to get it warm and I'm sure the dash temp gauge needle started moving up. I can't swear 100% it did, but I'm pretty sure it did.
Tonight however, I think, again it started to move up, then I run the bike up and down our long drive, just the get wheels moving again, back in garage, turn bike off (fiddle a bit) then on again to let it warm up to operating temp.
Bike warmed up ticking over, whilst I fiddled with throttle stop screw to get tickover just over the 1000 mark.
I then noticed the needle was still showing COLD ! Well that can't be right. Another approx. couple of mins later, the rad fan kicked in for about 30 - 45 ish seconds to cool the rad, then the fan stopped again. I turned the bike off as I could see all was working there.
So.......
Engine is getting warm when stationary, and after some time sitting the fan kicks in, so all working as should be.
But. If my dash temp gauge needle has decided (for no reason at all) to, out of the blue not move, what do you thing?
Perhaps some terminals need cleaning? Can anyone tell me, where I need to look to find the connections for the temp sensor that drives the needle?
As I say the fan is coming on and off, so the thermostat must be working fine. I just want my needle to move of course!
Thanks
Temperature Gauge "Just" decided not to move?
Re: Temperature Gauge "Just" decided not to move?
Just to follow up.
I think (not 100% sure) it did start to work when 1st fired bike up tonight.
I then realised I'd not reconnected the fuel tank lead (fuel level light) connector, so connected that into the little bundle of connectors in the clear plastic shield just behind the tank.
It was after that, I noticed the temp gauge definatly was not moving.
Is the connector that drives the temp gauge also in that same bundle? Perhaps I disturbed a wire?
If it is in that bundle, can anyone tell me which connector/wire colours it is?
Just seems odd the needle just stopped moving out of the blue.

Re: Temperature Gauge "Just" decided not to move?
Going to have a look later after work.
No one got any ideas why my engine/water temp dial's needle has decided it's not going to move all of a sudden?
Despite, as i said, that the fan did kick in and cool the engine and turn off again, so "the system" seems to work (if thats how you phrase it) just the indicator Dash Dial seems to stay at zero for no reason.

Re: Temperature Gauge "Just" decided not to move?
Mine moves erratically too. I'm going to take the fairing off and have a good look in due course - could be the sender unit on the rad.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Re: Temperature Gauge "Just" decided not to move?
Ok, well, this seems to have foxed everyone here. Not 1 suggestion! Pretty rare!
Anyhow, I'm pleased to report good news, I fixed it
Just in case this happens to anyone else................
All it turned out to be thankfully was a poor connection with the single spade terminal on the left of the bike on the black water/block thing?
It was just the earth wire, as the spade was connected to a tang that was screwed to the bike.
Wobbled it and the needle moved, so pulled it off, cleaned it totally, pinched the push on bit with some pin nose pliers to tighten it up a bit, and all fixed and perfectly working needle again.
Nice when a fix turns out to be such a simple thing

Thanks....Kev L wrote:Well done on locating the issue fella.
Well, I got lucky that it was such a simple fix, and with the engine running I was pushing and pulling cables, and suddenly the needle jerked into movement, so I knew i'd found the culprit

Nice when something that looks expensive and tricky, turns out to be just a simple contact with a tiny bit of corrosion, a quick clean and good as new

If only all "issues" were as simple to fix.....
