Starting & Charging issues.....again!

Post by JonaStorm »

Sorry if this has been covered time and again but I cannot get my head round my specific problem, so bare with and here goes.
I bought the Storm a year ago and straight away realised that the reg/rec. was u/s as was the battery (fried) as it was charging at 18 volts!

So, I bought a modified reg/rec. and although not an original believed it to be a decent copy and along with this put a new Yuasa battery in and thought all was fine. Until I had to get it MOT'd recently and it would not start so I jumped it but once started did not charge correctly.

So, round number 3 I bought a reg/rec. from Electrex (so a high quality one) and another new battery and all seems ok, BUT, it is still charging at an odd rate in that at idle it's charging at around the 14.1 volts mark (with headlight on) but when you rev it the voltage decreases to about 13.5 to 13.6 volts and does not go any higher. Bizarrely and as a consequence the headlight dims slightly when you rev the bike.
I am at a loss as to know what to do now and am not sure that it won't let me down if I ride it like this.

My question is could it be the winding's in the generator itself as I am now at a loss as to what to do next.
Sorry for rambling on but I needed to bore you with the whole story. Any thoughts or what to try next much appreciated.

Could be poor earth, as a test poke some wire into the earth from the R/R and take it direct to the battery earth then see what voltage your getting, if all ok then permanently earth to the battery.

On all my MOFSET installs I bypass the OEM wiring harness for the charge and ground wires. The OEM wiring on olderbikes may be undersized, poorly terminated at the ends or connectors, often has old style unsealed connectors that allow corrosion. Additionally, old wires can have increased electrical resistance. All of those possible issues are eliminated if you use marine grade, tinned primary wire in 10 or 12ga, modern sealed connectors that are properly crimped (full circle, multi crimp, not just smashed together crappy crimping pliers) or properly soldiered.
Use a sealed type ATO fuse holder if you feel the need, or wire directly from R/R to battery..both charge and ground wire.
I normally find an increase in voltage to the battery, and much less troublesome overall.

If after doing what popkat suggests with ensuring a good earth and that doesn't pan out - check to see if there's a dodgy connection somewhere in the charging system connectors, Otherwise then could well be the alternator.

You can visually check it (by taking off the engine cover) and if has black burnt sooty windings rather than nice and clean and coppery coloured then best replace.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

I've got exactly the same problem. My r/r is permanently connected to negative terminal of the battery (connection nice and clean ) and still when you rev it voltage drops to low 13. I have a feeling it's generator at fault and will have to run some tests in my spare time. Not too sure when that happens though.
