HELP!! Jetting + easy mods??

Hi, I'm at motorcycle mechanic just after some information to make my life easier. I have just bought a 2003 vtr1000f firestorm. It has a k&n air filter and yoshimura slip on mufflers. Anyone know the correct jetting to run this and mix screw settings. Someone has over jetted and I really only want to pull them apart once. Also if anyone knows some simple and effective mods I'd love to hear them. Look forward to hearing:)

Short answer no.

If k&n is fitted it does need to be jetted, dynojet kits work, has yours got dynojet jets ? if it has then for filter and cans the middle size that comes in the kit should work ok, phone dynojet uk and ask what size jets come in the kit.. dynojet jets are not the same size as standard jets, ie if a standard jet is 185 a dynojet 185 won't be the same.

Mixture is different on most bike, try 2-2 1/4 turns out from full in, if you have a gas analyser then you can see if it's good or not, but pia to adjust as you need to remove cabs each time.

Your best bet is to get it onto a dyno at a place that knows their stuff with carbs.

big man. iv seen vtrs breaking peoples hearts with jetting. forget the blurb you read on the net..its simple.

walk over to bike. femove k&n filter and fuk it in the bin... they completly wreck the jetting. dozens have tried them, bin it.
standard honda filter is the only way to run vtrs.

There is a thread on the other site and a couple on here on how to set up carbs.

I am also in the throw the K&N in the bin crowd.....I gave mine away around 15yrs ago and never looked back.

So no one can just hand you an answer, read the threads and then decide which set up you like best and go from there.

A nice rich tea colour? Is that before or after dunking? Rich tea biscuits are light before, and dark afterwards.

Or do you mean tea, as in a 'cup of'? If that's what you mean, then the Irish term for a rich cup of tea is: "well stewed" The sort of stuff you could tar a road with and stand yer spoon upright in. And a deeper brown colour than the guy that works in the corner shop.... But, as I've never heard of anyone having stewed plugs, I'll stick to the biscuit colour theory.

Now, with all this talk of chops, tea and biscuits, I must away and fill me tum. S'after 11pm, and haven't eaten anything since 2. Stomach is thinking that my throats been cut.

i kinda worked on the theory. why put less petrol in the engine. why not put more air in instead. seems to be working ..

Anyone else done this ? It is new to me (feel free to offer your opinion Hawk, or anyone with their thoughts on this) I might just give this a go with my spare airbox cover! (as things are still running a bit rich here also)

A chap (Ablett?) in Japan got drill/saw happy on his VTR, but he made so many other mods to his fueling and airbox (based on IL4 tuning tricks) leaving him running much worse than standard...

Conclusion

We tried a bunch of things, and I decided to give this up. In conversations with the Dyno operator, he really seemed to think that without the Stage One cams, and pistons, and the head job, that this set-up is just not going to work. In the end, He showed me two or three other Dyno runs from customers with the same bike and with the same pipe, they went up one or two sizes on the mains, and maybe one size on the slow jets. These dynoed at between 105 Hp and 108 Hp. The power curves were nice and smooth too. I'm going back to stock, because I sure cannot afford the Stage one Moriwaki set up, but I cannot...

I tried, it ran worse.
I can send you a predrilled airbox lid if you want to have a go....

I also experimented with MRW's prototype air filter- it ran dreadfully and almost unrideable.

it seems these vtrs all seem to be a little different when it comes to setup? . bit like a woman. they look the same but have different buttons that make them work
