If it is a CCT (cam chain tensioner) on the way out, you don't want to be riding the bike as it is, as it could workout expensive,

Also make sure that garage know V-Twins, specifically the VTR and how to time it. See the workshop knowlagebase for more info. It's not uncommon for a garage to mess up when it comes to V Twins.

Definitely lucky escape.
I'm not so sure I will be that lucky. Bought my twin in July then did my test while it was parked at my brothers place and yesterday he brought it back and the dreaded rattle from front end head was unmistakeable. Got up this morning to start it up and it won't start at all. I'm new to all this can anyone please advise coz I just don't know where to start

Ouch! Well done on passing your test but sympathies for your unfortunate introduction to one the of the VTR's annoying foibles. and yes there are a couple or three more niggles to rectify that help turn the VTR into a more reliable, less wallet consuming & fun pastime.

DON'T try and start it! You'll need to delve in the head (more than likely the front pot) to inspect the damage caused by valve/s meeting piston. Hope you are handy with the spanners or know somebody who is. Put your location up in case you're near anyone who knows what they are doing.

Did you brother ride it when it was rattling or has it spontaneously failed when trying to start it?
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.
