Anyone have or had MIG exhausts?

Post by Stevo Kifaru »

Wondering if anyone knows if the baffles can be fixed in MIG exhausts, my right hand one appears to have come loose and would like it repaired (don't judge me you baffleless outlaw types! )

I run high level MIG's, and found that Akra baffles fit perfectly.
Funnily enough, one side of mine has started to loosen a little :eh:

I ran with baffles in last week on a track day, then took them out and enjoyed the antisocial racket for another week.
But today I've reinstalled them, as I quite liked the sound with baffles in.

I think they'd look better being shortened slightly, they currently extend out level with the rear light and I'd like a few cm's shorter- not stubbies, but a little shorter.

I may strip and rebuild in a week or so- I already have some nice blind stainless rivets, including one black one for each can strap.....

Mig use nice thick carbon sleeves, they don't suffer from large power pulses like thinner ones do- my previous Carbon Can Co ones needed rebuilding every couple of years, but the MIG's have not needed attention since they were fitted.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

How would I go about repairing the baffle? Mine are aluminium and riveted, can't see any obvious access to the inside

Drill out the rivets at the outlet end, then pull hard.
The MIG badge is riveted on, to remove this you have to remove the sticker- don't suppose you can get another one now.

The mounting plate (that mounts onto the pillion pegs) is bolted on, but the bolt isn't always captive inside....so you have to reach down inside after the perforated tube and as much baffling mat as possible has been pulled out.

Lastly drill out the rivets at the link pipe end.

If the rivet holes are loose, drill oversize and use larger rivets for reassembly.

If the sleeve holes are shot, slice a 10-15mm slice off of each end, and re-drill the holes using the strap as a template.

Tony,

If you want some shorter ones I have a set of tubes and internals in yellow kevlar twill that will suit your bike. They have massive holes in the end where some one has used bolts instead of rivets to hold them to the internals. I presume you can cut these down to get rid of the holes and you'll get the shorter ones you want and in a colour to match the bike?

They are all in bits but your welcome to them if you can do something with them?
Why ask... sometime you just go to do it and find out?

That's a very kind offer, prompting me to rip your arm off, so to speak.
Yes please...
I figure that cutting the drilled section from the entry end and also from the exit end will result in a shorter but not stubby can.
Purely aesthetics, but hopefully not enough to lose performance- they're that length for a reason...

Let me know if you're coming in this direction anytime in the next month, or if I can meet you in Maidstone; otherwise if you can pack them I'll arrange a Hermes collection.

Found a spare pair of sleeves today in my stock shed- the ones on my bike are starting to suffer from loose rivets, especially the entry end of the LH can.
These spare ones have had the same problem, but I've cut 15mm from both ends, and they look to be usable.

The mounting bracket actually bolt to the can sleeve, with a metal plate inside. These will now be in the wrong place to mount to the pillion peg points, so I'll have to think about that and come up with a solution.
One observation- the sleeves are really thick- 2.5 or 3mm thick. No wonder they went broke!

One site says that they were bought /taken over by Nikko in France- any french owners on here able to check this out?
It would be good if you can still get spare sleeves...
They're 100mm diameter, if I recall correctly, and I rather like mine.

So I'm not the most diligent of VTR owners, finally got around to trying to fix my exhausts, to be honest I got to like the sound they made, but now I'm working nightshifts, they are just too anti-social.....

I kind of wish I hadn't as I wasn't prepared for the disaster awaiting me........

Into the third day of sorting them out, just need to refit them, after a bit more polishing to be done. Here's the baffles now:

Looking good, mine were worse....
I'd suggest that as well as a polish and refit you also fit some baffle material and the sleeves.
Nearly there.
Be careful when riveting the ends back on, I found it hard to get the badges back on at equal heights both sides.

I love the way they purr on tickover, but when you need to open it up, it becomes a roar. Didn't get that with the baffles disintegrated. Will post a pic of them back on the bike in a bit, all shiny and sh1t. Managed to get my hugger on at the same time
