need a knee

Post by macdee »

As a result of a EEJIT crashing in to me 30 odd years ago and a poor job by the NHS
i am in need of a new knee ,its getting so bad i can only ride the bike on good days
just like a vtr i have twin knees
now i need to no if the left knee will fit the right knee and visa versa
DO i go for manual of auto and how long will they last between service
will it do any harm if i tick over while standing on one leg
what type of oil do you use with said knee
i know its a long shot but would anyone have a knee in there parts bin low miler of course

i also have problems slightly higher up with my exhaust and snorkel but thats for an other day

So have any of you men on here had a new knee installed and what do you think of the finished job
is there reduced movement etc
i have been known to scream like a girl do you think this could happen again after the OP
told you not to but oh no you knew better

Time for Varadero or new 90 odd bhp soon to be released Africa Twin with a more upright riding postion. I've got a 01' Transalp as a 2nd bike following a fem pop and the riding position is very comfy armchair like but lacks the VTRs horsies.

it hasn't been road tested much as he is 83 and not that lively, however he is pleased he has had it done and he gets about fairly well on his zimmer

I had a total left knee replacement 10 yrs ago and while it's perfect it's a massive improvement on the knackered old one. The movement you will have in any new knee depends largely on the movement you already have, ligaments / tendons etc all shrink when not fully used and are very difficult to stretch back to full length, eg if you have 50% movement in the joint at present you could probably expect to regain another 10% from a knee replacement but it’s extremely unlikely you’d regain anywhere nr 100%.

I have very limited movement in my knee although I have adapted my bikes to allow me to ride with this limited knee movement, on the storm I moved the left foot peg forward a few inches to give me the room I need, I did a similar mod on the Aprilia although I now have ‘race’ gear charge pattern (1 up 5 down) the mod to the RSV was actually easier than the Storm, with the Storm I had to remove the gear linkage and find an alternative gear lever (KX 80 MX one did the job) it was a bit of a faff but did the job albeit with limited ground clearance, the Aprilia is quite a bit taller than the Honda so I didn’t need to move it as much to gain the required room, it was simply a matter of reversing the OE gear lever (this give the race shift pattern) and moving the foot peg down and forward. Ground clearance while improved over the Honda is still not great and I still have issues moving my body weight about particularly in left handers and overall I can’t ride with the same confidence (or speed) I did prior to my original injury but without the replacement knee I wouldn’t be riding at all and TBH I’m getting to old to be racing about so having to compromise my riding isn’t such a bad thing. I suppose I could have opted for a more leg friendly bike ( cruiser, adventure type etc ) but I still like a more sports orientated machine so I'll just have to put up with the compromises.

My advice would be go for the new knee as soon as possible and then adapt the bike as necessary once you’re on the mend, it’s not a particularly bad operation (it’s not pleasant either mind) they’ll have you up and walking the next day and then it’s just a matter of letting it heal up before working on regaining as much movement as possible through exercise and physio.

Good luck with it.
I've now gone all European and bought a KTM Superduke GT and Aprilia RSV1000R :D ,
Storm is now gone  .

This really disappoints me to hear. :( I was hoping that when they eventually get around to giving me a new knee that I would regain full movement. What a shame, but what you say about the ligaments etc makes perfect sense.

I have a TI bar running through my fema and no fluid under the patella so it clicks and grinds. As for movement my left legs when fully stretched is not extended in a straight line and is slightly bent. Too difficult to explain, here's some pics.

Sorry about the bad pics flash didn't go off and it's not easy taking a pic of ones own leg while only standing on one.

After my accident a knee specialist saw me and told that he would be seeing me in about 10 years but right now would not be a good time because of my age (too young back then) as they only last about 10 years and each time they put a new knee in, it harder to to do. I expect technology has moved along since. If only they could inject some Teflon under my knee cap.

Twice I broke mine. Bent the TI bar which I have as a souvenir. When they gave it to me it still has blood stains on it.

Poxy bloody traction. I kept having to remove it so I could hobble out of bed and to the end of the ward where the unofficial smoking area was at the top of the fire exit stairs. Nurses would not help and did not like me getting out of bed, but thankfully there was a patient on the ward who was a fellow smoker so he used to help me. I would have crawled if I needed too I was craving a smoke that bad. How crazy is that for addiction.

Talking about addiction. Not had a smoke today. Vape is doing it's job.

They put a couple off screws in the top of the bar up near my hip too, but they got removed. I have them as a souvenir too. The bar runs right through the centre of the whole fema bone.

The second off was about a year after getting back on the bike after being on crutches and everything had healed to the point where I could ride again. Totally my own mistake as I was speeding and overshot a corner and onto an oncoming car that I clipped. It didn''t really take as much impact as the first off which was major.

The first off, I hit an Island in the middle of the road outside St Thomas Hospital over the road, well Thames really, from Big Ben. Me and the bike separated when my fema met the lamppost :eek2 My ankle was ripped apart and as it got mangled around the footpeg and that was with bike boots on 8O Apparently my foot was hanging by a thread and it was only because they got to it so fast with being outside a hospital that the surgeons saved it.

I don't really remember much as the paramedics dosed me up with some kett-Morph, the best trip off my life :plainsmile I woke up in A&E with a finger going up my backside and then they relocated my ankle back into place, I screamed and fell back unconscious with the pain. I remember in my dazed state some nurses or someone behind me discussing that they should have given me another shot of Morphine before going ahead with the procedure. wombles that hurt more than the impact of the crash.

WOW..got news on in front of me. Have you seen the exo skeleton.

I used to be a motorcycle courier doing the London circuits, so the odds where against me. Best job I have ever had, loved it, but it felt like I was working to earn the money to pay the courier insurance and keep the bike on the road to be able to work. sh1t money and it wasn't really like a job but more off a lifestyle when you spend on average of 10 hours a day on the road riding, apart from the waiting time with no packages onboard. And then when you not working your riding for pleasure. My first off was when I was working.

The worst thing of all is that I lost the bike, a CB1 Jap import with modified engine and allspeed race exhaust. It got put into storage by the recovery firm that was called by, I guess plod. Then I was in Hospital for a few weeks and could not afford the storage fees so had to let it go. Another form of legalised theft that, a bit like Insurance.
