Main fuse blowing
Hi all
I decided on sunday with the weather being nice to start the bike up and go for a spin.
Turned ignition key....everything dead. did some research and discovered battery should have been charged more regularly (newbie...well oldie turned newbie) mistake.
Bought new battery and fitted, still dead. Turns out the main fuse was blown, I replaced it and when plugging the connector back in the fuse blew again!! (twice)
Thought I had better come back indoors and lick my wounds and seek help.
Bike running fine when put away in December. No work of any description carried out since.
Your thoughts/help/guidance much appreciated. thanks in advance.
cheers

Re: Main fuse blowing
Found this thread in the meantime!

I have a new Mofset regulator from Mac ready to fit (one of the jobs on my list)
Could this have failed whilst not in use? seems unlikely with bike not running, but what do I know?

Sounds daft but you havent connected the battery the wrong way round. + & - wrong way. That would blow the fuse.lockwood1956 wrote:Found this thread in the meantime!

Pretty sure the battery is on the right way round, but now I'm paranoid!MacV2 wrote:

Re: Main fuse blowing
I'm thinking that it wasn't the battery at fault in the first place.
There must be a short for the fuse to blow in such a way ( twice)
Just can't work out why this has happened when bike not in use?

Re: Main fuse blowing
I had a problem with my first storm, I hadn't moved or charged the battery but while riding at died on me, like you I changed main fuse a couple of times and they blew straight away.
Contacted Mr Mon and he correctly diagnosed that my original rectifier was shot, fitted a new one job done

The thng that I can't get my head around is it all going pear shaped whilst hibernating.
Turned key on Sunday to find all dead, no signs of life at all

Re: Main fuse blowing
Yep that would puzzle me too, but I dose seem like your rectifier is the cause if you have touched nothing else, or maybe a rusty starter motor connection that is arcing out causing the fuse to blow?

Re: Main fuse blowing
I was thinking that as well. The live (+) terminal of the battery should be on the lefthand side (gear change side) of the bike. If it's not that, then I also suspect it's the rectifier that's gone,MacV2 wrote:

Re: Main fuse blowing
One other possibility is mice chewing insulation off a wire or two and causing a dead short.
But you can check easily enough- just unplug the RR and see if it still does it.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Re: Main fuse blowing
Live terminal def on the near side ( left)
Not touched the regulator as yet, hence my puzzlement re failure
Will check connections to starter
If it were the regulator, if I unplugged it and changed the fuse, without plugging regulator back in would this test it?bor would it be breaking the circuit to other potential problem areas?
Just thinking out loud and hoping it makes sense

Re: Main fuse blowing
Removed connector from regulator and everything lit up fine
I can't get my head around the fact that it blew when not in use!!!
Regulator replaced with mofset one supplied last year by MacV2 ( cheers Mac)
Running a treat now
Thanks for the help guidance and advice chaps, Tis much appreciated, whilst I had the rear fairing off I fitted the grab rail I purchased last year too.
Handlebar conversion next on the list, have the bits and a set of flats and a set of 1" rise. May tackle it this weekend, not sure f I will need extended brake hoses, I suspect with the flat bars I might just get away with it

You'll probably need to extend the horn wire, the rest should be okay with that conversion, different if you had a higher bar conversion. Post up some pic's when you're done
