Brighton Checking In
Hello all,
I picked up a very tidy old 98 VTR on Friday with 21,000 on the clock , and have been soaking up information from this site all weekend. I had a lot of different bikes through the late 80's and 90's as a London M/C courier (but never a maggot, GT or boxer), but it's been almost 10 years now since I last had a bike on the road.
I have plenty of questions, but my only concern so far (apart from sorting some manual cam chain tensioners and the regulator/rectifier) is the crazy loud Art end cans it came with. Has anyone had any luck with adding aftermarket baffles/DB killers to loud/race cans? Do some baffles work better than others? or failing that, can anyone recommend some quieter aftermarket exhaust end cans?

It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Welcome aboard mate. I'm not far away. Worthing based.
Few people here this neck of the woods.
Need anything give me a shout. If I am able I'll help (suppose that limits things!!!)

Hello and welcome .
ArT cans are the loudest out there ,baffles will help a bit but not much .
However re-packing them and fitting baffles works wonders .

Re: Brighton Checking In
I really appreciate the warm welcome an offers of help and support.
As to 'embrace the noise' though. TBH, it wouldn't normally worry me too much. The problem is Brighton. I'm at the top of the steepest part of the hill that goes down to the coast, in an area full of 100 year old small terraced houses. My garage is surrounded on three sides by terraced streets backing onto it, with many houses having 2 back bedrooms. This location, together with the art cans as they are, could probably set some kind of world record for the most people woken up by one motorbike starting.
This summer I'm regularly going to be getting very early starts on the bike on Saturday mornings. I couldn't even coast out of the area and then start it, because my garage is down a steep dead end alley from the road. After a few months of this, even the hippyish green neighbours might be tempted to burn me out
I'll give it a go repacking them and putting in longish baffles before ditching them. (They look great, like new really, and the'd sound great with the same tone but less decibels, but 'as is', they are too much). I'll let you know how it goes anyway. I've read mixed reports about the effectiveness of aftermarket baffles on the interwebs. Some claim a significant difference, and others not so much.

Welcome aboard
Good to see someone being considerate and thinking about their neighbours
When I bought my can's (okay ordered them to be precise) at the NEC many years ago, it was a choice between Arts' or Scorpion's, in the end I went for the Scorpion's knowing Art can's were/are louder
