Forks.. tank slappers.. what can i do?

had an almighty tank slapper today giving it medium beans on a road ive ridden at a good 40 mph faster on before on my fzs 600 with old tired suspension..

it was bad enough for me to prepare to jump off it scared the hell out of me.
a lot of people saying suspension needs setting up.

im going to hazard a guess that it has standard springs and such.

what can i do to improve this?
ive looked at springs but £90+ is a bit steep considering how much this things cost me already, anything i can do to improve this without breaking the bank.

im around 12 stone
im not sure what the preload setting is as ive never come across it on any bike ive owned before.

Try checking tyres + pressures matched pair(?), head bearings (as you seem to like to wheelie that'll will shorten their lifespan) service the front end inc alignment. Fluids and springs (ideally Rogered).

Can't recall in 60,000 miles on the VTR if I've ever had a tank slapper...

is there not a set of springs on the site for sale?, change the fork oil god knows how long its been in the forks as a start.

Storms normally a stable old beast. Have you got a spacer on the shock or adjustable length shock?
Isn't there a pair of hyper pro springs for sale at the moment?

Yeah there is £55, if i can sell my new unused headlight ill snap them up... but ive had a few people ask for price and info and never buy it...

If tyres are good condition and pressure, then Tank slappr will be as a result of forks dropped too far in the yokes or a shock spacer

Only had one slapper before but I was being a naughty boy !!

do the basics first, check tyre pressures and then if you can, change the fork oil, that alone makes a difference. Get a syringe and some thin wall time and suck it out of you can't remove the forks. Just remember to support the front of the bike first.!!!! i do know somebody who did do that.

I have been setting up my mates new Storm with the Manxton suspension, We fiddled set as the instructions but he said it was still not too good. I rode it, and guess what he was 12psi short of air in the bloody front tyre. He told me he had checked that but his gauge was well out. The bike now handles a doozy. what a twot.

As with all these problems, go back to standard settings first (the Storm will not behave this way in standard trim) before bolting on yet more crap which may only disguise a more serious issue.

and check the rears not to hard. a lot of front end slappers come from the back of a bike..my shocks to hard and i cant soften it and i know just how often mine gets very interesting round corners if its not smooth

Loose steering head bearings would be the first thing to check (after tyre pressures). My VTR is a very stable thing to ride on all surfaces. If the rear has been jacked up (with a shock shim) and/or the front lowered, this will reduce the natural stability somewhat. If the fork springs are knackered and the bike is riding low at the front that would also make for more exciting handling.
