Info on making my own exhausts ...

Post by Stepkevh »

As a tig-welder i would be crazy not to try and make my own exhausts in stainless steel.
But as i lack knowledge around that subject, maybe some clever guy's here have some info.

Are there certain things to keep in mind ?
Does the volume need to be the same as the original ones ?

And something that i always questioned, purely talking about "straight-through" pipes here,
how does it come that if you take 2 different brands with same model they make a different sound ?
More ... less damping-wool ?

Love the sound of Microns, 2 Brothers, .... just that deeeeep lovely note that gives you the shivers

You may want to try modding a stock header first, as I recall reading it was pretty good, up to the collector that is, which is supposed to be undersize for optimal performance. Personally, I would try making a larger collector as a first step.

As for the header diameter, going bigger will improve top at the detriment of bottom and going smaller will have the adverse effect.

Good luck and keep us posted :)

Stock vs yoshi big bore .
Just remember Honda,HRC ,yoshi, moriwaki, akrapovic, arrow, pumped millions into exhaust development .
My advice would be to reproduce one of theirs .
The stock headers only need the welds cleaning up in the very first bit where it meets the head .

It all depends on how loud you want them to be or how you want them to look like. 8)

Good job with the polishing on the exhaust headers

As I understand it, changing the total length of an exhaust system will change the way the big runs, and may mean carb settings, even jet changes will be needed,

But at first, what kind of shape do you have in mind? I think it can be hard to say something useful unless this is known.

Does the shape affect the sound it makes ?

Definitly not round, maybe oval or even triangular in some way :)

Length is a factor - stubbies are very noisy.

Why not find a damaged aftermarket can, dismantle and see if you can duplicate it with some reverse engineering.

Bigger internal diameter 60mm with a long 500mm can will sound very deep but not bark if you know what I mean .
The quill cans have a 55 or 57mm internal and 470mm long and by far the they sound deep and dirty .
Ask anyone who has them without baffles

That was actually my first idea with my own cans... the one you see on the pic up here.
These cans are damaged, i already changed the outer rings with 15 mm / 0,8 mm Stainless Steel and new SS rivets.
The center bracket is also changed by myself with again SS 30 mm / 0,8 mm.
Just did that to have something when i can start driving it, thats why i can't use those to do some reverse engineering
The sound they make is wow :)

Your link isn't working :)

Still dont get the use of bigger internal diameter while the headers are only 42 mm.
My ovals are 42 or 45 internal and only 440 mm long, nice deep sound as well :)
