Starter motor

Post by Ianasauras »

Hi guys,

Reckon my starter is on its last legs. The bolt under the rubber boot is so corroded it might as well be welded on.

So I reckon a new starter motor is what's needed. I know the VTR ones are expensive, but what other bikes starters fit? Hornet 900, CBR?

Lastly, is the replacement hard? Will I lose much oil and need to do an oil change too?

Appreciate any help you guys can give.

Most +500cc late90s / early naughties Honda starter motors will replace the vulnerably postioned VTR one. Honda Hornet, CBR, Blackbird, Fireblade starters can be had in good condition from as low as £20 from ebay and as they're positioned away from road crud they'll be fairly immaculate.

Undo two retaining bolts and carefully wiggle old knackered starter out, and look at replacing the lead from the relay to the terminal if that's also corroded. No need to worry about oil. And remember to keep it greased up under the rubber hood to prevent corrosion occurring.

Thanks.

The old lead is corroded on there so I'm hoping to take the old one out with that still attached to the starter. Do I disconnect this from the relay on the right hand side of the bike on the rear subframe?

I have a spare power cable with boot if you need one quickly.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
