timing rt mark and piston position
hi everyone i know it an old bike don't know how manny fo you still rides
i just got one vtr 1997 after the crash accident
and set up everything changed the engine covers as bouth had damage
had to change flywheel
and trying to start
i get metal hitting sounds l- but started very rought and still hear something not rite
so checking timing the most interesting that doesn't mach
makeing everythings as you write rt mark lobes looking towards each other and up
marks on sprockets looking out
turning engine round and i hit something - a valwe
got a lot of mechanics all of them say the piston has to be at top position when you set up shafts
so i forgot the rt and ft marks and did as they say
so nothing is hitting but i am afraid they are not rite either. and i am afraid to start the bike this way
but still rt mark is very far away from the piston top position so i don't know anymore
please help if anyone can
regards from lithuania

Hi, have a look through this post it explains how to set the timing correctly with pictures.

Re: timing rt mark and piston position
very nice tutorial for seting it up thanks
just it;s not solving the issue
and my question
should it be the top point of the piston when you are at rt mark or not
and if it should, can anyone tell me why i am not at the top point when the flywheel is on rt mark
just removed the gen cover checked if the flywheel is same to original markings- it's same
or if i set up to rt mark and follow all the instructions line up all the shafts and after 360 anticlockwise turn i hit the inlet valve

Re: timing rt mark and piston position
cam lobes point up at both the same angle, marks on cam sprockets lined up level with top of cylinder head then valves closed and piston at top, it shows it in the guide, RT mark in line... you can't get the valve hitting a piston unless it's one of the front cylinder valves, have you checked the cam timing on front cylinder on FT mark ?

Re: timing rt mark and piston position
got same problem with front
will triple check everything tomorrow
and still waiting if someone ever checked if the rt or ft mark is the highest points of the pistons
hope it's not

Re: timing rt mark and piston position
With all 4 valves closed (everything lined up) piston will be at TDC

Re: timing rt mark and piston position
Did you fit the Woodruff key when you changed the rotor ?

Re: timing rt mark and piston position
I had a broken woodruff key on my first storm and the flywheel wasn't in the correct position .popkat wrote:Did you fit the Woodruff key when you changed the rotor ?

Remove the flywheel and check its location ..
I'd also reset the cams to be on the safe side but it's worth checking valve clearances to make sure you haven't bent a few valves .
Re: timing rt mark and piston position
I'm not a mechanic and have no experience of the storm, but I seem to recall from the days when I used to set the points up on various engines, one Mark was for cam timing and the other was for ignition timing. So maybe the mark you are describing is for ignition? Dunno, just a thought.

Re: timing rt mark and piston position
Woodruff key is there
in place
and rt mark is not the higest piston position
so i think i will folow the highest point of piston that's all and forget about rt mark
later will turn round 360 plus 90 to get the front piston top point
and as long as nothing is hitting the valves i should be fine

Re: timing rt mark and piston position
Remove the cams (front and rear) set flywheel to RT fit rear cams.
Rotate crank 1&1/4 turns counter clockwise do FT is Lined up on fw then fit front cams .
Simples .
If RT on the flywheel is lined up and the piston ain't at tdc then the flywheel ain't located correctly on the crank .

Re: timing rt mark and piston position
The flywheel key has smashed on the surfase of crank. Problem found. But not solved yet.
Thanks to everyone

Re: timing rt mark and piston position
Aha... hopefully the crank is still usable. If not I have some good spare cranks.
A key failure usually means that the flywheel end bolt wasn't tight enough and it's allowed the rotor to move relative to the crank, and the key shears sideways along its longest dimension.
Suggest you drop the sump to thoroughly clean it and fit a new oil filter and oil in case there's bits floating about.
If you find bits of key in the bottom, I'd also suggest a look at the oil pump filter and rotor surfaces- again, I have spares should you need them.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Re: timing rt mark and piston position
was hard but i got my Woodruff key out
to be honest got it flying in to the sump so fur sure i will need to take it off and clean of all small peaces
my crank is fine
got some signs of the damage but nothing magorr
so if anyone has spare Woodruff key i'd be very happy
i am from lithuania but i got forwarding repostal address in london
