Fairing replacement or repair

Post by spanner boy »

I have a 97 storm with a damaged fairing on both sides. The bike is yellow and I'm looking for some advice, either aftermarket, second hand original (lefthand is as rare as hens teeth), or repair and respray in which case does anyone know of a good colour match technique. Still very fed up so all help appreciated.

For the cost of a decent respray you could get a compleat set of Chinese one of the bay...some say the quality & fit can be a bit iffy, others are more than happy.

If you go down the respray route there is a specific colour code for your bike, there may be a paint code on a lable on the top rail of the subframe normaly on the left hand rail IIRC...however that a/might be missing b/may not be the origonal subframe.

There is a list of paint codes in the knowlage base I think...

Also getting the right paint code for a match & only having the two main panels painted it wont match the the rest of the 19 year old paint...

There is a member who does a bit of paint work...he may be along shortly to add his wisdom.

Are they structurally damaged or just road rash? Paint code will be on the bike. If it's pearl it's harder to match plus it's a 3 stage paint. You need to bare in mind that the original paint will be faded to a degree so colour matched paint will always look slightly different. If you plan on spraying yourself then both sides expect to spend around £100-£150. Professional sprayer near double. Although I do know someone that is in the middle of both of those prices :biggrin

Aftermarket would be a complete set so should match but have heard its hit and miss with finish and fit. Expect to pay around £400 for aftermarket set.

Second hand is cheapest option. Better colour match, perfect fit and OEM. Only issue as said is finding the perfect ones but should be able to pick up in good condition for around £50 each.

Thanks for the help so far. It's pretty much as I thought. I'm leaning at the moment to a repair so need to decide how to fix the plastics which have cracked off on each side. I'm thinking of using a two pack resin reinforced with fiberglass. I'm really interested in anyone offering a respray then to a good standard.

If you go down the aftermarket route you will still need to get the fuel tank painted to match.VTR Phoenix painted my belly pan and done an excellent job at a very reasonable price

OK so a slight change in direction I'm now thinking of going down the replica route and going for a repsol scheme. This is after looking at MFS fairings. Does anyone have any experience with this firm.

I had a look at that website and even though it's a co.uk address when clicking the where we are tab they are in China. I would say that given that it would be the same as other Chinese fairings hit and miss, also as Allan said don't forget to factor in the cost of a tank respray £150ish plus decals and also that the tank colours might not match the fairing colours unless you can get paint codes from them.

I might have a spare set of yellow side panels, look like they've been "repaired" at some point, if they're any use to you let me know.

Cheers

Fix em up with some basic tools and materials (dremmel, plastex, bumper filler, wet & dry and plastic primer)

http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=26537

The fun thing will be matching the Honda yellow (code on subframe). Take the code to your local auto paint factors and get a few rattle cans and recommneded undercoat, and some ProXL ProClear utra gloss lacquer. Perfect weather for it!

It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

I'm going to suggest plastidip instead of paint, done properly, it's hardwearing, cheaper to paint, and doesn't damage your original paint underneath.

Thanks for all the suggestions and offers. I have found a local body shop who have quoted 140 max for both sides weld and paint. Looking on their website they do a lot of classic bike work and get great reviews. I am paying them a visit later in the week so I will let you know how I get on. Meanwhile while the fairing is off i plan to take thw chance to do the cam chain tensioner and headlight so should get some improvements foe the effort.
Thanks

There are lots of mixed opinions regarding chinese panels.. the set I have in my shed... I would say they are crap and that's before I even try to fit them. The paint work is awful.

Early yellow storm... unless your bike has had a hard life then you shouldn't have too much trouble with matching the colour... hell, I could get an acceptable match from a rattle can

£140 for both sides... that don't sound bad at all. Let us know how you get on
