Any Ideas ?

Post by MoonCat1 »

Hi Everyone, been a member for a couple of months having made the choice of a VTR 1000, FIRST big bike and FIRST big twin, after returning to Biking after a few years absence.
Been well impressed with the power & delivery from the bike and was gonna wait until the winter until I started to make my own mark on it.

Today I was on my way back from the Burnham bends and engine started to "clunk" and after a few seconds lose power and die. I still have the automatic chain tensioners (mileage is around 30,000) and as I type this I'm awaiting recovery outside Great Baddow. What would be the symptoms of the cam chain slipping ? I havn't tried restarting it just in case of valves etc, can anyone point me in the direction of a local Guru ?

Put your location in your user profile Rob so we know where "local" is.
I'm so unlucky that if there is such a thing as re-incarnation I'll come back as me!

CLUNK CLATTER CLUNKETTY CLICKLETY CLUNK

Usually the front CCT fails and a wise move not to try restarting it as that can lead to more damage - see this recent CCT failure resulting in bent valves thread > http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 23&t=39871
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

did you get her home yet
as the men have said don't start it although if its cct the damage is done
usually just needs valves to fix it

9 times out of 10 it's the front cylinder so will require tank and airbox removal. Set front cylinder onto the compression stroke and follow Steve's advice above to verify a failure. If it has failed then you need to check to see if any valves have been damaged. To do this will require a bit more work and removal of the front cam cover and checking valve clearances for excess clearance. Hopefully you have got lucky but lets see where you get with checking the tensioner itself first.
