Lithium Battery

Post by Mav617 »

Hi all,

Anyone used this type of battery on their Storm, as mine could do with a new battery and I was thinking of saving some weight (seeing as I can't get the standard cans off!):

In fairness it's only the right hand side but it's stuck fast, even liberal use of PlusGas isn't helping - I suppose heat might be next but to be honest I can't really afford new cans and quite like the standards looks/noise, they are just sodding heavy - anyhoo, anyone tried the batteries or heard reports?

Tony ran one for a while.

It ran flat on the run to Devon last year.

Much fun was had trying to push start the bastid in the service station.

High comp pistons & all that he was running...

IIRC it was a fuel pump issue & not the batt but repeated trying to start it flattend the batt.

Also Mik over in Canada rus one I believe...

Yes and IITC that one melted. Lucky it didn't go up in flames. :eek2 I wouldn't bother with Lithium personally especially when you look at the price difference. Eat less pies if you want less weight. Then again if your going downhill extra weight could be an advantage. Make sure you have good brakes instead.

I'd consider one for Spring/Summer /Autumn use if weight saving was a mega factor. But bear in mind if you use your bike for all year round use as the battery efficiency drops a lot at freezing temps on lithium batteries. On my leccy lithium batteried KTM pedelec range drops by around 20—30% over the chilly days of winter...

Plus you'd want to consider where the source of the component cells were from for the price you pay - wether quality Panasonic or substandard Chinese knock offs (along with BMS) as there's the potential catastrophic consequences and literally a firestorm....

The lipo batteries caught fire not being charged. Just sitting there in the garage. When I opened the garage door last night, it was full of smoke and water from the fire sprinklers. I was able to get the garage for opened and drag the bike out to the curb. I'm so bummed that all six of my RC airplanes burnt up too.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Personally I'd go for a genuine Yuasa battery, but go for a bigger amp hour, a Yuasa YTX14-BS. It's 15mm taller and will require removing the battery box top, unless you like warm nuts

Use only battery with lifepo4 cells like shorai, these are working fine. But you need to have reliable r/r. Downside is that in cold this battery take some time to heat up.
I use homemade battery pack from a123 cells for years without issues, but usually I don't ride a bike under 10 degrees, so cannot tell you how it is really working in cold climate.

Have you considered losing the battery entirely? Could always go for a capacitor bank instead?

I use one.
It ran on the storm for a year and is now powering the sp2.
No problems at all.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
