Heard the news this morn about the quakes in NZ...Do hope none of our NZ members are affected...

I'd normaly say something along the lines of ''Thinking of you & sending positive vibes your way...''

But maybe more vibes is the last thing you need right now...

Good shout Mac. I think NZ is at the end of the fault line that runs through Japan and across that part of the world so I wonder who will be next and when it will hit. Earthquakes is something that is not very well predicted.

Thanks for your thoughts guys. I'm a long way from the epicentre, apparently the shakes were felt where I live but I was fast asleep. There have been a couple of fatalities, and lots of property damage, although thankfully the area hit is not heavily populated. There is a big disruption to the road and rail infrastructure as the major north-south road and rail line runs right along the coast and there have been a lot of major slips, and that has cut off the town of Kaikoura (pop 4000) completely. So I'd expect a fairly big repair bill and lots of disruption to people's lives, but nothing that we can't soldier through.

Earthquakes is something that is not very well predicted.

Very, very hard to predict and you only get a few seconds, minutes at most notice. The amount of energy where plates meet is immense and the build up so slow, yet the release so violent and quick. Makes you glad the only real sh1t we have to deal with in this country is of our own making mostly - no volcanoes, quakes, snakes.

Yes I was discussing this with a Kiwi down the pub tonight. Imagine if something like that hit London.

Woundn't necessarily be a bad thing IMO Carl, yeah It would be a shame to lose some of the historic buildings, but if the epicentre was somewhere like Plumstead...quite possibly it would be the best thing to ever happen to that area...

I am joking of course...As long as it happens when I'm off work...

in that vein there's a BBC series about streets in London and it seems that for a long time pre-, during and post-war everyone had it in for Deptford High Street and wanted it removed.
