Very, very hard to predict and you only get a few seconds, minutes at most notice. The amount of energy where plates meet is immense and the build up so slow, yet the release so violent and quick. Yes I was discussing this with a Kiwi down the pub tonight. Imagine if something like that hit London.although thankfully the area hit is not heavily populated.
