No Spark 98 Firestorm!
No Spark 98 Firestorm!
Alright lads , So have the bike a few months now! Bought cheap as a project/winter hack! , Bike was running for months with no issues , great power , holding charge etc! Had it running one morning as I was getting ready to go for a spin I stalled the bike taking off! Went to start it again and noting!Just keeps turning over! All fuses are good , none blown! Tried a different cdi still to spark! Would anyone have any ideas on what to try next? I couldn't imagine the 2 coils just going like that would they? No spark on either plug lead! Or maybe try new leads?
Re: No Spark 98 Firestorm!
Have you checked you have power going to both coils with the ignition switched on

There's a good chance it's the rectifier which is under the seat on the right hand side
If it has no cooling Finns there's a good chance it's gone bad and killed your battery as well
You could try and charge your battery to see if it's ok
But don't run the bike until you have checked the R/R

told you not to but oh no you knew better
Re: No Spark 98 Firestorm!
Im going to get a facetester at the weekend as im working away and only home at weekend and ill try the coils! I just didn't think that they would just stop like that! Thought theyd break down over time or that!sirch345 wrote:Have you checked you have power going to both coils with the ignition switched on![]()

As above...... sounds like dodgy reg/rec and fooked battery. Where abouts are ya
Ok just seen where ya are. Won't be up that way any time soon

Yeah but he says it still keeps turning over, it wouldn't do that if the battery was gone,

Re: No Spark 98 Firestorm!
Yea battery def has loads of life in it! So id rule that out!!
Re: No Spark 98 Firestorm!
My R/R went just before my mot
It turned over and over until it killed the battery
Not knowing it had gone bang I stuck and other battery in
It turned over again until it killed that battery as well
I would cast my eye over the R/R just to be sure

Here's a link to an easy flow chart to diagnose the charging system.
If u have any problems I can throw up my number to talk ya through it

the older i get,the faster i was

Re: No Spark 98 Firestorm!
Sorry gang, I don't agree that the RR will be the culprit. It is on the charging circuit, not the ignition circuit. A dodgy RR will either not charge the battery (so that goes flat) or it will over-charge the battery and cook it. I expect you could start and run the bike with no RR in place; eventually it would stop when the battery went flat. I think that is what the racer boys do when the ditch they alternator and run solely off the battery.
I agree with Sirch, you need to check that there is power going to the coils. Something like the kill switch or the wiring/connector that feeds to/from the right bar pod would be a good place to start IMO.

Re: No Spark 98 Firestorm!
Nothing to do with rr, check your coils with a multi meter to make sure they haven't packed up. I'm assuming you have checked for spark? Remove plug and ground against engine and turn over. What condition are the plugs in? Change plugs and give it another go.
If it aint broke, get your bloody hands off it!
Re: No Spark 98 Firestorm!
Which "CDI" did you change?
The VTR has two-box system and both can fail.
Both are in front of the rear light under the seat.
One has a 16 pin connector, that's the ICU ignition control unit. The other one has a 6 pin connector and that's the CDI.
If the ICU failed, it's a plug and plax repair with a Ignitech TCI P4.
If the CDI failed, you need a bit of wiring to make an Ignitech DC CDI P2 work.
You can find details on both in the FAQ's.
What I have seen was a failed ICU due to a broken RR, but in that case other stuff happened, too. Things like dead batt, burnt lights, ...
Unfortunately you could only diagnose that with a running engine, so focus on that one first.
Don't waste time with measuring the coils. It's extremely unlikely that they both fail at the same time.
The other thing I'd look at is the pick-up (vr-sensor that captures crank position). You can measure resistance and peak output voltage when cranking.
And first try to unplug/replug all connections to make sure they're not oxidated.

Waste time? No time is wasted and may as well check the easy stuff and move on from there. Check for spark first and work backwards simple.MK_WF wrote:Which "CDI" did you change?
