Fitting (Bazza's) MCCT's - My Experience

Post by davebonline »

Hi all, just wanted to share my experience of doing the manuals on my 98 Storm.

I decided on Bazza's modified versions of the manuals as I prefered the standard look and also they give good access to the lock nut on the front cylinder.

I followed the excellent guide on this forum (thanks VTRDark) and everything went relitivly smoothly once I'd removed the notorious genny cover bolt, this was a proper pain in the Ar$* and I ended up having to use heat and the chisel and lump hammer method:

After sorting this I proceded to strip everything down which took a couple of hours (was taking my time). So the first evening I got it down to this point, deciding to leave the actual fitment till the next evening:

The following evening I took off the covers, checked the timings as per instructions, removed the auto's and fitted the manuals. I adjusted the chain to between 5-7mm as per guide:

Here's a shot of the manual tensioner bolt pressing up against the chain guide:

The next evening was spent reassembling everything, so all in all it took 3 evenings and around 6-7 hours in total. I was deliberately taking my time though, and I only had a couple of hours free on each evening. If I had to do this again I reckon I could manage it in around 3 hours.

Bazza's tensioners seem to work great, the extra length proved useful for adjustment on the front cylinder and overall they look reasonably stock on the bike. As per guide description, upon starting for the first time there was some audable chain 'ticking' but this quietened down after a few minutes and the engine sounded really sweet after that. The bike runs and rides perfectly and now I have peace of mind :)

Well done you now have peace of mind when out for a ride. The r/r must be next on the list.

Yeah, mine has the original non-finned version. What do you recommend?

Some use Yamaha R1 r/r but I got a mosfet from "roadstercycle" in USA. Not the cheapest way but I went for ease of fitting as it was plug and play. Simple

Well done Dave  Glad it all went well.

Taking your time is the way to go IMHO when tackling a job like this when you have little or no experience with this type of work.

Great clear photo's too, which I'm sure will come in handy for future Firestorm/Superhawk owners taking on this job,

Chris.
